Thermal Insulation Treatment for Container Houses

Admin September 15, 2026

The thermal insulation treatment of container houses can be achieved through material selection, structural optimization, and auxiliary design, with the core being to block heat conduction, reduce heat absorption, and promote heat exchange.

1. Application of Thermal Insulation Materials

  1. Wall Filling Materials
High-density thermal insulation materials such as rock wool, polyurethane foam layers, or polystyrene foam are used to fill the space between the inner and outer wall panels of the steel frame. For example, the polyurethane foam layer needs to be at least 50mm thick, which can block more than 80% of heat conduction. Its heat transfer coefficient can be as low as 0.45W/(㎡·K), and its thermal insulation efficiency is 1.8 times that of traditional brick-and-concrete walls.

  2. Composite Panel Structure
Sandwich panels (e.g., outer anti-corrosion color-coated steel plate + middle polyurethane layer + inner fire-resistant gypsum board) are used to control temperature through the synergistic effect of multiple materials. An aluminum foil reflective layer can further reflect solar radiation and reduce the wall's heat absorption rate.

2. Structural Optimization Design

  1. Roof Modification
Increase the roof height or adopt a double-layer roof structure to add an air circulation layer. Utilize the principle of hot air rising to form natural convection and reduce heat accumulation. For example, container houses in Texas, USA, have significantly improved their thermal insulation performance by raising the ceiling height and combining structural insulation panels (SIPs) with aerated concrete (AAC) blocks.

  2. Thermal Break Insulation Process
Use thermal break aluminum profiles in window and door frames, combined with double-glazed units, to block the thermal bridge effect of metal frames. Install sealing strips around windows and doors to reduce the infiltration of hot and cold air.

3. Auxiliary Thermal Insulation Measures

  1. Surface Treatment Technology
Spray reflective coatings (such as white or light-colored paint) on the exterior walls to reduce solar radiation absorption. Install adjustable sunshades on the roof to reduce the area of direct sunlight.

  2. Ventilation System Design
Reserve ventilation slots at the bottom to promote air circulation; install exhaust fans or wind-driven cowls on the roof to accelerate the expulsion of hot air. For example, Mogan Mountain Café achieves a comfortable environment without air conditioning in summer by combining bottom ventilation slots with sunshades.

  3. Temperature Control Equipment Supplement
In extreme climates, use air conditioners, graphene floor heating systems, or solar water heating systems to regulate indoor temperature. Foldable container houses achieve energy-efficient temperature control through the linkage of solar vacuum tubes and insulated water tanks.

4. Construction Detail Handling

  1. Joint Sealing
Use waterproof membranes and sealants to fully seal panel joints and window and door closures to ensure continuous sealing. Design a reasonable drainage slope on the roof to prevent rainwater leakage from rendering the thermal insulation layer ineffective.

  2. Vapor Barrier Installation
Lay a vapor barrier on the inner side of the thermal insulation layer to prevent moisture condensation from affecting the thermal insulation effect. For example, residential container houses control humidity and stabilize temperature through the synergy of fire-resistant gypsum boards and vapor barriers.
