Sturdiness of Prefabricated House Slabs

Admin September 18, 2026

The sturdiness of prefabricated house slabs is influenced by multiple factors and cannot be simply judged as absolutely sturdy or not. Details are as follows:

Characteristics of the prefabricated slabs themselves: Prefabricated slabs have different grades for bearing live loads, such as Grade I and Grade II slabs. Prefabricated slabs that meet the standards can meet the load-bearing requirements of buildings under normal use. Their manufacturing process is also crucial; a standardized manufacturing process can ensure the quality of the slabs. Prefabricated slabs are cement components prefabricated in factories. They are formed by nailing wooden models, arranging steel bars, and pouring cement. However, prefabricated slabs are hollow, lightweight, with the middle part basically not bearing force, and have relatively poor integrity.

Overall integrity of the house structure: The connection methods between prefabricated slabs and between prefabricated slabs and walls have a significant impact on the sturdiness of the house. If the connections are not firm, it will lead to an unstable house structure. Compared with cast-in-place structures, the overall integrity of prefabricated slab structures may be slightly inferior. Cast-in-place structures can better connect all parts into a whole, improving the sturdiness and seismic performance of the house. Therefore, modern building structures mostly adopt cast-in-place structures. Under external forces such as earthquakes, prefabricated slab structures are more likely to be damaged and collapse, and their hollow interiors also result in poor waterproofing.

Usage and maintenance conditions: The sturdiness of prefabricated slab houses varies under different usage environments. In earthquake-prone areas, their sturdiness may be greatly affected. Regular inspection and maintenance of the house are essential. If problems such as cracks or peeling of the prefabricated slabs are found, timely repairs can maintain their sturdiness. Existing prefabricated slab houses generally have problems such as weak seismic resistance, poor sound insulation and heat insulation, with a service life of about 30 - 50 years. Some regions have already started demolition work. Since 2022, China has implemented the old housing renovation policy, focusing on repairing and renovating prefabricated slab houses and only demolishing buildings that meet the criteria for dangerous houses.
