Standard Sizes of Housing Containers

Admin September 16, 2026

The standard sizes of housing containers mainly include the following types:

I. International Standard Sizes

International standard containers primarily come in 20-foot and 40-foot units. The external dimensions of a 20-foot container are typically 6058mm in length, 2438mm in width, and 2591mm in height (some sources indicate a height of 2680mm, which may vary slightly due to design differences). The usable internal space is slightly reduced due to wall thickness. The length of a 40-foot container doubles to 12192mm, with the same width and height as the 20-foot container. These sizes comply with international maritime standards, facilitating global transportation and stacking, and are commonly used in scenarios requiring overall relocation.

II. Domestic General Sizes

In domestic construction sites and road construction scenarios, the standard size of container houses is commonly 6000mm in length, 3000mm in width, and 2800mm (or 2900mm) in height, covering an area of 18 square meters. This size optimizes internal layout, balancing living comfort and material utilization, making it a mainstream choice in the market. Some manufacturers may adjust the height to 2600mm to reduce transportation costs, but attention should be paid to potential space constraints.

III. Special Application Sizes

  1. Small Containers: A 9-square-meter model measuring 3000mm in length, 3000mm in width, and 2800mm in height is suitable for temporary guard posts or equipment rooms. However, due to low material utilization, it usually requires customization by customers.
  2. Two-Story Containers: A 21-square-meter model measuring 7000mm in length, 3000mm in width, and 2800mm in height meets multi-story living needs through the addition of corridors and balconies, commonly found in construction site dormitory clusters.
  3. Foldable Containers: Standard models follow the international sizes of 20 feet (approximately 6 meters) and 40 feet (approximately 12 meters). After folding, the height can be reduced to one-third of the original size, significantly reducing transportation costs.

IV. Customized Sizes

According to project requirements, container houses can be fully customized. For example, Guangzhou Jinge Company produces 40-foot spliced houses with single-box dimensions of 11800mm×2250mm×2800mm. Three boxes spliced together can form a living space of 80 square meters with dimensions of 11800mm×6750mm×2800mm. Customization ranges cover parameters such as length (3-12 meters), width (2.4-3 meters), and height (2.6-2.9 meters), with specific plans to be determined through consultation with the manufacturer.
