Standard Container House
Admin September 15, 2026
A standard container house is a residential or office building form that uses containers as the basic structural modules and is transformed through modifications. The following is an introduction from multiple aspects:

I. Structural Types
- Welded Integral Box: It is welded into shape as a whole in the factory, with a direct load-bearing path. The roof load is transferred to the bottom sill through the side wall columns and then evenly distributed to the ground through the bottom sill. This structure has strong resistance to deformation and is suitable for frequent lifting and moving.
- Bolt-Connected Assembled Box: It uses standard plates connected by bolts. There are multiple connection nodes in the load-bearing path, and the tightness of each node directly affects the overall stability. When purchasing, check the steel plate thickness of the columns and bottom sill. Common specifications range from 1.5 mm to 3 mm. The thicker the plate, the greater the load-bearing redundancy, but the corresponding increase in self-weight.
II. Performance Characteristics
- Structural Stability: Structural stability is a core safety indicator and must comply with relevant building seismic design codes. There are differences in the wind and earthquake resistance capabilities of products from different brands. For example, the product of Suzhou Zhongnan Steel Structure Co., Ltd. has a maximum frame deformation of only 2 mm under the action of a strong wind of level 12, which is far lower than the national standard limit of 10 mm.
- Thermal Performance: The metal container body has a high thermal conductivity coefficient, and relying solely on plate insulation is difficult to cope with extremely cold or hot environments. Usually, a multi-layer structure is adopted, such as a galvanized plate on the outer layer to resist wind and sand erosion, rock wool filled in the middle layer as the main insulation layer, and a PVC-coated steel plate on the inner layer to reduce thermal radiation.
- Spatial Function: The fixed size of the container forces designers to adopt a functional overlapping strategy. The kitchen and bathroom are compressed to one end of the container to form a wet area, while the living and sleeping areas achieve day-night functional switching through the variability of furniture.
III. Application Scenarios
- It is commonly used as workers' dormitories on construction sites and is also used as rental housing by some people.
- Outside construction site scenarios, it has become a popular choice for cultural and tourism campsites, pop-up stores on commercial streets, camping bases, and convenience service points. The containers can be used individually or combined by multiple containers to build creative spaces such as multi-story offices, campsite reception centers, and container cafes.
