Songjiang District Container House Renovation

Admin September 16, 2026

There are multiple successful cases of container house renovation in Songjiang District, covering renovation directions such as public cultural spaces, elderly care facilities, and commercial buildings, with a focus on combining functionality and environmental protection.

Public Cultural Space Renovation

The "Wangtian Bookstore" in Yaojing Village, Maogang Town, Songjiang District, is a typical case. The village transformed abandoned containers into a two-story rural public cultural space, with a reading room and coffee bar on the first floor and a scenic rest platform on the second floor. The renovation features a striking color scheme of an orange main body and white streamlined tables and chairs, creating a unique visual effect in combination with the surrounding farmland landscape. The internal functional planning was participated in by the Party branch of the Territorial Branch of the Shanghai Urban Planning and Design Research Institute, achieving efficient space utilization through modular design while controlling costs through donations. As a practical case of the "Rural Responsible Planner" system, this project demonstrates the cultural empowerment value of container renovation in rural revitalization.

Elderly Care Facility Renovation

The "Happy Elderly Village" project in Songjiang utilizes containers donated by enterprises, transforming them into white small houses. Inside, beds and tables and chairs are arranged to form rest spaces, while outside, wooden tables and chairs made from waste materials are provided. During the renovation, discarded billboards were used as tabletops and old riverbank fences as table legs, reducing construction costs through resource reuse. This case reflects the adaptability of container renovation in elderly care scenarios, with its modular structure facilitating rapid deployment and allowing for adjustments to meet different functional needs through interior soft furnishings.

Commercial Building Renovation

The container building complex constructed by Shanghai Jiku Architectural Modular Co., Ltd. on Rongle East Road in Songjiang District uses 30 discarded shipping containers to create a two-story space encompassing functional areas such as offices, capsule hotels, and restaurant bars. The interior decoration of this project follows five-star hotel standards, with a construction cost of approximately 4,000 yuan per square meter (including decoration). Through modular design, the construction period was shortened, and waste generation was reduced. Despite compliance controversies due to the lack of national standards, its "container shop" model provides a commercial space solution for scenarios with restricted land properties.

Renovation Technical Points

Container renovation requires a focus on structural reinforcement, waterproofing treatment, and functional adaptation. For example, the "Wangtian Bookstore" addresses container heat insulation issues by adding a roof, while the Rongle East Road project enhances space utilization with a two-story layout. During renovation, environmental technologies such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems can be incorporated to further strengthen sustainability.
