The Simplest Portable Toilet

Admin September 21, 2026

The simplest portable toilets can be handmade using everyday materials, with common solutions including the modification of water storage buckets and the combination of water storage tanks. Their core features are easy-to-obtain materials, lightweight structures, and quick assembly.

Water Storage Bucket Modification Solution

This solution uses a single water storage bucket as the main structure, achieving toilet functionality through basic processing. The specific steps are as follows:

  1. Material Selection: Choose a plastic water storage bucket with a capacity of 50-100 liters, ensuring the bucket is sturdy and has good sealing properties.
  2. Structural Modification: Cut an oval opening on the side of the bucket as the toilet opening. The size of the opening should match the toilet seat. Reserve space at the bottom of the bucket for installing a drainage pipe. The end of the pipe should be connected to a sealing cap or hose for feces storage or regular cleaning.
  3. Functional Expansion: To enhance comfort, a simple toilet seat (such as a plastic board with holes drilled for fixation) can be installed at the bucket opening, or casters can be used to enable mobility. This solution is cost-effective (material costs are approximately 50-100 yuan), and assembly takes no more than 2 hours. It is suitable for temporary use on construction sites or in emergency situations.

Water Storage Tank Combination Solution

This solution constructs a more fully functional portable toilet by stacking two water storage tanks, with the specific design as follows:

  1. Main Structure: Select two plastic water storage tanks with top openings (a capacity of over 100 liters is recommended). Invert one tank as the base and place the other upright as the wall.
  2. Functional Zoning: Cut a door opening (approximately 60cm×180cm) on the side of the base tank and install a simple toilet inside. Install a sink and showerhead at the top opening of the upright tank, and connect them to an external water source through a water distributor to achieve basic washing functions.
  3. Sanitation System: Connect a drainage pipe from below the toilet to the bottom of the base tank for regular cleaning. The wastewater from the sink should be discharged through a separate pipe to avoid cross-contamination. Although this solution requires more materials (costs are approximately 200-300 yuan), it offers more comprehensive functions and is suitable for temporary events or wild camping. Assembly takes about 4-6 hours.

Core Design Principles

Both solutions adhere to the following principles:

  1. Material Versatility: Prioritize the use of plastic water storage containers due to their corrosion resistance, ease of processing, and low cost.
  2. Structural Stability: Ensure load-bearing safety by cutting openings and reinforcing connection points (it is recommended that the load-bearing capacity of a single tank should not exceed 100kg).
  3. Hygiene: Feces storage devices should be sealed and leak-proof, and regularly cleaned to avoid odor diffusion.
  4. Mobility: Optional casters or lightweight designs can be used to facilitate manual handling.

Although these simple portable toilets cannot replace professional products, they can quickly meet temporary toilet needs under resource-limited conditions, especially in remote areas or emergency situations.
