Lifespan of Simple Container Houses
Admin September 15, 2026
The lifespan of simple container houses typically ranges from 10 to 30 years, with the specific lifespan influenced by factors such as the type of house, the quality of raw materials, the usage environment, and maintenance and upkeep.

1. House Type and Raw Material Quality
- Customized Container Houses: These are usually made from modified shipping containers. Standard shipping containers, when exposed to the high-salinity and highly corrosive environment at sea, have a specified retirement age of approximately 10 to 12 years. However, after retirement, through secondary modification, overhaul, and maintenance, their reasonable usage can be extended by about 15 years. If brand-new shipping container materials are used and regular inspections and maintenance are carried out, the lifespan can reach 25 to 30 years.
- Simple Iron Sheet Container Houses: These are made from materials of relatively poor quality. Their service life is mostly within 5 years, with some of better quality reaching 7 to 8 years.
2. Usage Environment
- Mild and Stable Environments: In areas that are dry and have little wind and rain, the lifespan of container houses may approach the upper limit (e.g., 30 years).
- Harsh Climatic Conditions: In areas with high humidity, high salinity, strong winds, high temperatures, or cold temperatures, the structure and materials are prone to damage, and the lifespan may be shortened to 10 to 20 years. For example, a humid environment accelerates steel corrosion, while a dry desert environment may extend the lifespan.
3. Maintenance and Upkeep
- Regular Maintenance: This includes rust prevention treatment, painting, checking interfaces and water tightness, etc., which can significantly extend the lifespan. For example, applying protective paint every 1 to 2 years to keep the exterior color vibrant can improve durability.
- Avoiding Human-Induced Damage: Collisions, forceful stepping, or random changes to the layout can significantly shorten the lifespan. If layout changes are required, the supplier should be consulted.
- Professional Repairs: When phenomena such as paint peeling or rusting occur, the manufacturer should be contacted for handling. Do not apply paint or remove rust by yourself.
4. Other Factors
- Transportation Protection: Avoiding obstacles during transportation and taking protective measures can prevent scratches that lead to corrosion and extend the overall lifespan.
- Structural Reinforcement: Appropriate reinforcement according to usage requirements can enhance structural stability and extend the service life.
