Shenzhen East Station Smart Portable Toilet

Admin October 02, 2026

The smart portable toilet at Shenzhen East Station is the first facility of its kind to be put into use in the city. Designed and developed by the Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design and Research, it has been put into trial operation on the second floor of Shenzhen East Station.

I. Basic Structure and Facilities
The toilet consists of four independent cubicles, including three unisex cubicles (two seated toilets and one squat toilet) and one maternity room. Each cubicle covers an area of approximately 1.5 square meters and is equipped with basic facilities such as a toilet, sink, hand dryer, and air conditioner. Additionally, it features user-friendly devices such as a storage shelf, clothes hook, emergency call button, and mirror, ensuring both practicality and safety. The maternity room provides a private space for special groups, reflecting the humanistic care in the design.

II. Smart Features

  1. Smart Usage Management: The toilet employs an automatic door opening and closing design, with an indicator light outside the door to distinguish the cubicle status by color (green for unoccupied, red for occupied). To prevent prolonged occupation, the system sets a maximum usage time of 15 minutes per person, with voice reminders issued as the time limit approaches. A progress bar for usage time is displayed on the outer door to enhance efficiency.
  2. Water Conservation and Resource Recycling: Through water-saving facilities such as reclaimed water circulation and air handwashing, the water conservation rate can exceed 70%. The feces collected in the collection tank can be converted into organic fertilizer after dehydration treatment, achieving resource reuse.
  3. Smart Deodorization System: Equipped with a self-developed deodorization device, the system automatically activates the exhaust system through temperature and humidity sensing and odor gas detection. After multi-layer filtration and purification, odorless air is discharged, improving the toilet environment.

III. Flexibility and Applicability
The toilet does not require connection to water supply and drainage systems, does not occupy municipal resources, and does not require underground pipeline excavation. With a height of less than 2.1 meters, it can fit into subway elevators, facilitating easy movement and arrangement. After being transported to the site by vehicle, it can be assembled in just 15 minutes, making it suitable for various indoor and outdoor scenarios such as bus stops, municipal parks, exhibitions, and subway platforms, offering advantages in rapid deployment and flexible adjustment.

IV. Social Significance and Future Optimization
As the passenger flow at Shenzhen East Station increases, this toilet will provide significant assistance in addressing the public's toilet needs. In the future, functions will be further optimized based on public feedback, such as adjusting usage time limits and improving maternity room facilities, to better meet diverse needs.
