Shanghai Public Environmental Protection Mobile Toilet

Admin September 28, 2026

Shanghai has made various improvements and enhancements to its public environmental protection mobile toilets, covering aspects such as exterior design, age-friendly and child-friendly modifications, care for sanitation workers, and the promotion of green environmental protection concepts.

In terms of exterior design, Shanghai emphasizes the harmonious and aesthetically pleasing integration of mobile toilets with their surrounding environments. Taking seven mobile public toilets located on Haitong Road and Meihua Road, Shiji Avenue and Weifang Road, and Zhangyang Road and Miaopu Road in the Pudong New Area as examples, they use soft hues like light beige and light brown as the base colors, complemented by dark blue to outline the frames and accentuate certain parts. This design is not only practical but also blends well with the surrounding environment, enhancing the overall image of the city.

The age-friendly and child-friendly modifications are a major highlight of Shanghai's public environmental protection mobile toilets. Focusing on four major categories and 30 specific details, including "safe passage, assisted walking, independent toilet use, and service optimization," Shanghai has installed barrier-free handrails for the elderly to facilitate their entry and exit and provide support while using the toilet. Anti-slip floor tiles have been laid to reduce the risk of falls among the elderly, and lighting has been optimized to provide sufficient and soft light, ensuring their safety during use. For children, low-level hand basins and child-sized toilets have been installed for their convenience, and anti-collision corner guards have been added to prevent injuries from collisions within the toilet.

Some mobile public toilets have also added exclusive "Sanitation Worker Stations" for sanitation workers. These stations are equipped with facilities such as refrigerators, shower rooms, microwaves, and charging ports, providing a place for sanitation workers to rest and replenish their energy. Sanitation workers can take breaks, heat up meals, and charge their devices here during work intervals, demonstrating care for this group.

In addition, in 2026, Shanghai launched the search for the "Shenmei Toilet" campaign, interpreting the beauty of public toilets in terms of humanistic care, green environmental protection, exterior design, civilized promotion, and functional innovation. Among them, "green environmental protection beauty" encourages the use of natural and environmentally friendly materials, energy-saving and water-saving devices, and biological and ecological technologies to promote the development of public environmental protection mobile toilets towards a greener and more sustainable direction.
