Shanghai Metro Portable Toilets
Currently, Shanghai Metro does not have widespread installation of portable toilets. Here is a detailed introduction to the toilet facilities in Shanghai Metro:

Early Construction
When Shanghai Metro first opened, toilets were not included in the overall design plan. During the early stages of metro operation, passengers often faced significant inconveniences when needing to use the toilet while riding the subway. This situation reflects, to some extent, the inadequate consideration of passengers' basic needs during metro construction at that time, as well as the limitations of the technical level and planning concepts of metro construction.
Addition of Temporary Toilets
Around 2008, Shanghai took the opportunity of hosting the World Expo to optimize and upgrade metro facilities. Among these improvements, temporary toilets were added at some stations of Shanghai Metro to enhance passengers' toilet experience. The addition of these temporary toilets alleviated, to a certain extent, the difficulty passengers faced in finding toilets and provided necessary support for the large influx of people during the World Expo. However, temporary toilets also have some limitations, such as relatively simple facilities and potentially subpar sanitary conditions.
Toilet Construction in New Lines
Starting from 2015, new metro lines under construction in Shanghai have uniformly included public toilets in the paid-area platforms during the planning stage. This measure reflects Shanghai Metro's increased focus on passenger needs and experience during the planning and construction process. Placing public toilets in the paid-area platforms facilitates passengers' use of toilets at any time during their journey, reducing the need for passengers to enter and exit stations repeatedly in search of toilets, thereby improving metro operation efficiency and passenger satisfaction.
Toilet Upgrades and Renovations
Currently, Shanghai Metro toilets are moving towards version 3.0, with many toilets in poor condition undergoing upgrades and renovations. As of 2023, 306 public toilets at old stations have been upgraded and renovated, and toilet renovations at 186 stations are scheduled to take place from 2024 to 2026. Through these upgrades and renovations, Shanghai Metro toilets will see comprehensive improvements in facilities, sanitary conditions, and intelligent management, providing passengers with a more comfortable, convenient, and hygienic toilet environment.
