Shanghai Container House
Admin September 10, 2026
Shanghai container-house bathrooms fall into two types—home integrated bathrooms and public container restrooms. They offer low cost, short build times, and modularity, but conversions must address waterproofing, drainage, and separating water from electrical systems.

Home integrated bathroom
Advantages:
- Budget and schedule: Traditional bathroom builds are complex and costly in materials and labor. An integrated bathroom can stay under $1,389, with a short install cycle—traditional finishing often takes more than two weeks, while integrated units cut that time sharply.
- Flexible customization: Units can be tailored to indoor dimensions and needs, fitting different floor plans.
Conversion essentials:
- Floor treatment: The container base is steel and rusts with prolonged moisture. First derust and apply antirust paint, then lay a 20 mm cement-mortar leveling layer, and finally cover with waterproof membrane or a welded stainless-steel drain trough.
- Drainage: Interior space is tight; slope must be ≥2%. Use PVC pipe ≥50 mm in diameter, and cut side-wall openings in advance to route wastewater to an external collection point so standing water does not corrode the structure.
- Sealing against seepage: Seal wall-to-floor joints with neutral silicone structural sealant, press in waterproof gaskets, and install 5-10 cm high water stops at corners to stop leaks that cause wall mold.
- Separate water and power: Run electrical conduits along the top of the box; route supply and drain pipes along the floor or side walls, keeping ≥30 cm between the two systems. Use splash-proof outlets and waterproof switches to avoid shorts in hot, humid conditions.
- Ventilation and dehumidification: Install forced exhaust fans and active dehumidifiers, leave louvered wall vents, and in some designs reserve duct connections for later equipment.
Public container restroom
Features:
- Modular and standardized: Built to 20 ft or 40 ft ISO container sizes for easy production, transport, and lifting, and for quick clustering into large restroom banks.
- Durable structure: Inherits the steel container’s wind, rain, and theft resistance; suits outdoor conditions and lasts a long time.
- Integrated functions: Squatting or sitting toilets, sinks, lighting, exhaust fans, insulation and thermal treatment, plus waterproof, easy-clean finishes.
- Fast deployment: As standalone units, they move by truck and crane, go into service quickly, and can be removed after an event without damaging the site.
Use cases: Large public events (music festivals, sports), construction sites, temporary urban needs (e.g., during park renovations), emergency response, and field operations—flexible, hygienic toilet solutions.
