Shanghai Characteristic Mobile Toilet Design

Admin October 12, 2026

The design of Shanghai's characteristic mobile toilets is reflected in multiple aspects, including unique styling, smart ecology, the concept of 'one toilet, one landscape,' and the application of 'cutting-edge technology.'

In terms of styling design, Shanghai features mobile toilets with an Apple Pod shape, measuring 8 meters in length and 3 meters in width. The exterior walls are made of metal carved panels, which are waterproof, moisture-proof, and heat-resistant, enabling them to adapt well to various environments. The front features a logo design, with a public handwashing area in the middle, offering a unique and practical appearance.

Smart ecological design is also a major highlight of Shanghai's mobile toilets. Taking the Gaohang Dongjing Road Smart Ecological Public Toilet as an example, it adopts an intelligent and green ecological design approach. For energy supply, it integrates photovoltaic power generation to achieve self-sufficiency in green energy. The exterior facade uses aluminum panel cladding combined with a canopy and light strip design, creating a dynamic look. This public toilet is characterized by intelligence and flexibility, capable of flexibly allocating male and female toilet stalls based on foot traffic. It allows for easy disassembly and assembly for the maintenance and updating of individual toilet compartments. Smart management enhances safety, enables dynamic replenishment of toilet supplies, and合理安排 (合理安排 can be translated as '合理安排' which means '合理安排' in English, but in this context, it likely refers to '合理安排保洁服务' which can be translated as 'arranges cleaning services reasonably') arranges cleaning services reasonably. Various sensors can detect the number of toilet users and air quality in real-time, featuring functions such as smart deodorization, human presence detection, and lost item reminders. An LED screen is installed at the entrance of the public toilet to display the time, temperature, calendar, and whether toilet stalls are available. Additionally, it includes a third toilet providing 12 convenience services, a pet parking area, and employs high-temperature steam disinfection and multi-color cleaning methods for management. Outside, there are rest areas and planting pots.

The design concept of 'one toilet, one landscape' is reflected in the renovation of some sanitation public toilets in Hongkou District. Each public toilet is designed in harmony with the surrounding environment. For example, the Yidishui Public Toilet at No. 588 Dongdaming Road in the North Bund Riverside Green Space incorporates water droplet elements into its appearance, with a blue and white color scheme complementing the metal toilet doors. Inside, it adopts an ocean-themed style, perfectly blending with the natural riverside landscape.

In terms of the application of 'cutting-edge technology,' the Yidishui Public Toilet's newly added third toilet is equipped with various facilities, including a touch-controlled automatic door system, a wash-and-dry integrated handwashing facility in the handwashing area, the addition of barrier-free ramps and handrails, the installation of alarm devices in each toilet compartment, and a smart outdoor screen that displays the usage time of toilet compartments in real-time.
