Self-Made Portable Toilet

Admin September 29, 2026

Making a portable toilet can be achieved through modular design, with common solutions including DIY water storage barrels, water storage tanks + caster combinations, and solar-powered upgraded versions, all centered around portability and functionality.

1. Basic Structure Solution Using Water Storage Barrels

This solution builds a framework centered around a water storage barrel, completing basic functions through manual DIY. Specific steps are as follows:

  1. Structural Construction: Select a plastic water storage barrel of appropriate capacity (e.g., 200L) as the main body, cut an opening at the top for toilet installation, and reserve a sewage outlet on the barrel body connected to a sealed valve.
  2. Functional Module Integration: Set up a layered structure inside the barrel, with an upper clean water tank (for flushing) and a lower sewage tank (for collecting waste), achieving flushing through a manual pump or gravity drainage.
  3. Portability Optimization: Install a foldable bracket on the exterior of the barrel and small casters (diameter 10-15cm) at the bottom for short-distance movement; cover the top with waterproof canvas or lightweight panels as a canopy for privacy.
This solution is low-cost (approximately 500-800 yuan), suitable for family emergency use, but requires regular cleaning of the sewage tank and has limited movement range due to wheel size.

2. Water Storage Tank + Pallet Combination Solution

This solution enhances stability and movement efficiency through standardized components, suitable for temporary use by multiple people:

  1. Chassis Design: Use a metal pallet (e.g., galvanized steel plate) as the base, sized according to the water storage tank specifications (usually 1.2m × 0.8m), with heavy-duty casters (load-bearing ≥ 200kg) fixed at the four corners of the pallet bottom.
  2. Water Storage Tank Installation: Secure a finished plastic water storage tank (with a sealed lid) in the center of the pallet, with quick connectors on the tank side for external flushing equipment or sewage pipes.
  3. Auxiliary Functions: Install a foldable handle on one side of the pallet for easy pushing; attach reflective stickers to the tank surface to enhance nighttime safety.
This solution is structurally stable (load-bearing up to 300kg) and flexible in movement, but requires pre-planning of sewage paths and regular disinfection of the water storage tank (recommended once a week).

3. Solar-Powered Upgraded Solution

This solution integrates a solar system into the basic solution to achieve energy self-sufficiency, suitable for outdoor scenarios without power supply:

  1. Energy Module: Install a monocrystalline silicon solar panel (power 200-300W) on the toilet roof, equipped with a 12V battery and controller to power LED lighting and exhaust fans.
  2. Functional Expansion: Add a microbial degradation device (e.g., a sawdust + bacterial strain mixture layer) to convert waste into harmless fertilizer, reducing sewage discharge; or configure a small septic tank (volume ≥ 50L) for periodic pumping and treatment.
  3. Structural Optimization: Use lightweight materials (e.g., aluminum alloy frame + PC panel walls), with a total weight controlled within 150kg for easy hoisting and transportation.
This solution is environmentally friendly but has a high initial cost (approximately 3000-5000 yuan) and requires regular maintenance of the solar system (battery replacement every 2 years).

Precautions: All solutions must comply with the requirements for hygiene, ventilation, and odor control in the "Urban Public Toilet Design Standard" (CJJ14-2016), and ensure structural stability during movement to avoid tipping risks.
