Self-made Iron Sheet Container House

Admin September 15, 2026

When building a self-made iron sheet container house, it is necessary to comprehensively consider structural design, material selection, functional realization, and compliance. Through reasonable planning, an economical and practical living or office space can be created.

1. Structural Design is the Core Foundation Traditional “iron sheet shell” containers only use a single layer of thin iron sheet plus a simple frame, which has problems such as poor stability and insufficient thermal and sound insulation. Modern residential containers use galvanized steel pipe frames as the main structure, combined with intermediate beam-column structures, significantly improving load-bearing capacity and enabling resistance to strong winds or external impacts. The walls should use sandwich-structured thermal insulation panels (such as rock wool or polystyrene), which can both insulate and block noise, avoiding extreme experiences of “cold in winter and hot in summer”. For the floor, it is recommended to use a multi-layer structure of “base plate + floor leather + bottom cotton strips”, add a ceiling and thermal insulation layer on the top, and use double-glazed windows and doors to comprehensively enhance living comfort.

2. Material Selection Should Balance Durability and Cost For the main frame, galvanized steel pipes are preferred as they have better rust resistance than ordinary steel, extending the service life. The wall sandwich panels must pass fire and moisture resistance tests to ensure long-term outdoor use safety. Among floor materials, building formwork has strong load-bearing capacity but needs to be paired with waterproof floor leather to enhance durability. If the budget is limited, second-hand containers (such as 3m × 6m standard containers) can be chosen, with costs ranging from approximately 4,000 to 13,000 yuan. However, it is essential to carefully check the container for rust and perform rust prevention treatment and reinforcement on damaged parts.

3. Functional Realization Depends on Detailed Design The interior space should be scientifically planned, such as expanding the usable area by combining multiple containers or using partitions to divide functional areas like bedrooms and living rooms. The water and electricity systems should have pipes pre-buried in advance, with reserved positions for lighting, sockets, and air conditioning holes. It is recommended to install lighting fixtures in the middle of the house, place switches beside the door, and position sockets 60 centimeters above the ground. Externally, window security grilles should be installed, and glass curtain wall waterproof sealant (with 5-6 times the waterproof performance of ordinary sealant) should be used at the joints of the roof panels to prevent rain leakage. For use in cold regions, the thickness of the wall insulation layer can be increased or underfloor heating systems can be installed.

4. Compliance and Safety Cannot Be Ignored Before construction, it is necessary to confirm local policy restrictions on the use of container houses (such as the duration of temporary buildings and whether they are allowed as permanent residences). During the renovation process, strict adherence to building codes is required, such as ensuring full welding of steel frame joints to avoid structural instability caused by incomplete welds. If used in public places (such as guesthouses or shops), fire safety approval must be obtained, and emergency escape routes must be provided.
