Self-Built Portable Toilet for Home Use
Admin October 05, 2026
A self-built portable toilet for home use can be achieved through the following three plans, with specific steps outlined below:

Plan 1: Water Storage Drum Modification Method
Basic Structure Construction
- Use an angle grinder to split the water storage drum vertically in half. Fix universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board for mobility; reinforce the top of the drum with wooden strips and self-tapping screws to increase height for human use.
- Cut a rectangular opening on the side of the drum as a doorway, install sponge strips to form a door frame, embed plastic soft panels to create raised walls to prevent sewage from splashing out. Invert the upper half of the drum onto the top of the wooden strips as a roof to form an enclosed space.
Functional Module Installation
- Drainage System: Drill a hole at the bottom of the drum to install a drain pipe as a floor drain, and drill a hole on the side to connect a direct joint for connecting to the sewage pipe.
- Shower Device: Place a plastic bucket on the roof as a water storage device, connect water pipes to make a simple shower heater and showerhead (requiring an external hot water source).
- Toilet Module: Place a toilet and install a water tank, seal it with glass glue; connect the drain pipe to an independent sewage bucket, extend the water pipe horizontally to the doorway as the inlet pipe for a sink.
Plan 2: Water Storage Tank and Pallet Combination Method
Mobile Base Fabrication
- Fix universal wheels at the four corners of the bottom of a plastic pallet and place a recycled water storage tank as the main structure.
Tank Modification and Assembly
- Use an angle grinder to cut along the marked line on the top of the water storage tank, remove the top to form an open tank. Invert another open tank and stack it on top, fix the outer frame with self-tapping screws to form a double-layer structure.
Functional Module Integration
- Doorway and Drainage: Cut a rectangular opening on the outer frame of the tank as a doorway, drill a hole in the internal floor to insert an elbow and a water pipe, and seal it to prevent leakage.
- Toilet and Water Use: Align the toilet with the drain hole and fix it with glue, use wall clips to fix the water pipe and install a faucet; make a sink with a stainless steel basin and fix it on a pipe cap, connect the toilet water tank and the shower hose.
- Door Installation: Fix hinges on the tank frame to connect a wooden board to form a door, and install a door handle to ensure privacy.
Plan 3: Solar-Powered Portable Toilet (Simplified Version)
Based on the modification of the water storage drum, add solar devices (such as solar panels and batteries) for power supply for lighting or heating shower water. The specific details are not fully disclosed, but the core logic is to enhance functional sustainability through a solar system, suitable for long-term outdoor use scenarios.
Precautions:
- Wear protective gear during cutting operations to avoid injury from metal or plastic debris.
- Use waterproof glue or glass glue for sealing to prevent sewage leakage.
- Regularly clean the sewage bucket to avoid odor diffusion.
