Self-built Outdoor Portable Toilet

Admin October 08, 2026

A self-built outdoor portable toilet can be made using a water storage barrel or tank along with a pallet, or you can directly purchase a ready-made product from the market.

Making with a Water Storage Barrel

First, use an angle grinder to split the water storage barrel in half lengthwise. Fix universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board for easy mobility. Then, use wooden strips and self-tapping screws to increase the height of the barrel. Cut an opening on the side of the barrel, install sponge strips to form a door frame, and embed plastic soft boards to create raised walls. Place the upper half of the barrel on top of the wooden strips as a roof and apply waterproof paint to enhance its appearance. Use foam strips to piece together honeycomb wooden boards to make a simple door. Cut a hole at the bottom of the barrel and install a drain pipe to form a floor drain. Drill holes on the side and bottom of a plastic bucket, connect them with direct fittings, and place the bucket on the roof as a small water storage device. Connect a water pipe-made bath heater. Install a three-way fitting below the water inlet pipe and connect it to a showerhead. Place a toilet and install its water tank, securing it with glass glue. Connect the drain pipe to a sewage tank. Horizontally connect a water pipe to the three-way fitting on the outlet pipe and extend it to the doorway as the water inlet pipe for a sink. Install relevant fittings and hoses, and finally, drill holes in the door to install fittings.

Making with a Water Storage Tank and Pallet

Fix universal wheels at the four corners of the bottom of a pallet and place a recovered water storage tank on it. Use an angle grinder to cut along the marked line on the top of the tank to remove the top and create an open tank body. Invert another open-top water storage tank onto the first one and secure the outer frame with self-tapping screws. Cut an opening on the outer frame and body of the tank to form a doorway. Cut a hole in the floor inside the tank, insert an elbow and a water pipe, and seal them with glue, cutting off any excess pipe. Place a toilet and secure it with glue. Fix a water pipe on the wall clips and install a faucet. Use a stainless steel basin to make a sink and secure it. Connect the water inlet pipe of the toilet tank and the shower hose, install a shower bracket and a toilet seat, and install a showerhead made of a water pipe. Use wooden boards and hinges to make a door for the bathroom and install a door handle.
