Seismic Resistance of Container Houses

Admin September 16, 2026

Container houses do possess seismic resistance, but the seismic grades vary among different types and designs of container houses.

I. Seismic Grades of Container Houses from Different Brands
The quick-assembly container series from Suzhou Zhongnan Steel Structure Co., Ltd. adopts a full steel structure frame. It has passed on-site wind resistance tests and can withstand winds of up to 12 on the Beaufort scale. Its seismic grade reaches 8, meeting the requirements of the GB50011-2010 (2016 edition) Code for Seismic Design of Buildings. Under extreme conditions, the frame shows no significant deformation. The standard container mobile homes from CIMC Modular Building Systems have a seismic grade of 7, the economical mobile homes from YAZHI Integrated Housing have a seismic grade of 6, and the customized mobile homes from Baosteel Construction Integrated Housing have a seismic grade of 7.5. These data indicate that the seismic performance of container houses can be significantly improved through structural design and material optimization, but there are gradient differences in the seismic capabilities of different brands and models.

II. Principles of Seismic Performance in Container Houses
Containers are usually manufactured using high-strength steel, and their structures have good load-bearing and deformation-resistant capabilities. When an earthquake occurs, the rigid structure of a container can reduce the risk of structural damage through the following mechanisms:

  1. Energy Dissipation: The ductility of steel allows it to absorb seismic energy through local deformation, preventing energy concentration from causing structural damage;
  2. Overall Stability: The full steel structure frame forms a continuous load-bearing system, reducing the impact of seismic waves on individual components;
  3. Code Compliance: Container houses that comply with seismic design codes such as GB50011-2010 have undergone seismic verification in terms of structural layout and connection nodes, ensuring functional integrity under expected seismic actions.

III. Limitations of Seismic Capacity
Although container houses have excellent seismic performance, their capacity is not unlimited. Structural damage may still occur when subjected to earthquakes exceeding magnitude 7. For example, extreme earthquakes can cause connection joint failures, wall detachment, or overall displacement, especially for economical mobile homes (such as the YAZHI model with a seismic grade of 6), which have a higher risk of damage in earthquakes exceeding the design intensity. Therefore, the seismic design of container houses should take into account the seismic risk level of the usage scenario and enhance the ultimate seismic capacity through measures such as strengthening structural connections and adding damping devices.
