Second-hand Container House Insulation Board
Admin September 17, 2026
Key information about second-hand container house insulation boards includes two aspects: material selection and construction steps.

Material Selection
Core materials for internal insulation layers
- Polyurethane rigid foam board/extruded polystyrene board (XPS): With a thermal conductivity as low as 0.022 - 0.030 W/(m·K), its insulation performance is significantly better than traditional rock wool or glass wool, making it a mainstream choice.
- Phenolic foam board: It has a fire rating of Class B1 and a thermal conductivity of 0.03 W/(m·K). It is suitable for scenarios with high fire-prevention requirements, and a thickness of 50 - 100mm is recommended.
- Polystyrene foam board: A new material processed from the polystyrene foam layer contained within black steel plates has high insulation performance. Polystyrene board itself is also a common high-quality insulation material.
- Other materials: Polyurethane foam boards are commonly used in the renovation of refrigerated containers. With a closed-cell rate exceeding 92%, they can effectively block heat transfer and penetration.
Basis for material selection
- Insulation performance: Prioritize materials with low thermal conductivity and high closed-cell rates, such as polyurethane rigid foam boards or polyurethane foam boards, to reduce heat transfer.
- Fire-prevention requirements: If fire prevention is required, phenolic foam boards (Class B1) are a better solution, while polyurethane rigid foam boards need to be treated with fire-prevention measures.
- Cost and availability: Polystyrene foam boards are relatively low-cost and suitable for projects with limited budgets. In the renovation of second-hand containers, polyurethane foam boards disassembled from refrigerated containers can be reused to reduce costs.
Construction Steps
Construction of internal insulation layers
- Cleaning and rust prevention: Polish the inner wall steel plates to remove rust and apply anti-rust primer to prevent rust from affecting the adhesion of the insulation layer.
- Laying of keels: Use light steel or wooden keels measuring 30mm×50mm or 40mm×60mm and fix them to the steel plates at intervals of 400 - 600mm to form cavities for accommodating insulation materials.
- Filling of insulation layers: Cut the boards to sizes that match the intervals between the keels and tightly fill them into the cavities to avoid heat leakage through gaps.
- Covering with finishes: First, lay an aluminum foil moisture-proof film to reflect radiant heat, and then install OSB boards or gypsum boards as interior wall finishes to take into account both moisture prevention and aesthetics.
Special treatment for 12-meter used containers
- Container body repair: Clean up the damaged parts inside to ensure structural integrity and prevent the insulation layer from becoming ineffective due to container deformation after installation.
- Customization of insulation boards: Customize the boards according to the size and structure of the container body to ensure a good fit and reduce the difficulty of joint treatment.
- Joint sealing: After installation, check all joints and seal them with sealant or special tape to prevent heat from penetrating through the gaps.
