Practical Guide to Rural Mobile Toilets
Admin September 27, 2026
The practical guide to rural mobile toilets requires special attention to type selection, installation and use, maintenance management, and anti-tipping measures, as detailed below:

I. Type Selection Should Match Actual Needs
Choose the appropriate type based on family size, usage frequency, and climatic conditions:
- Dry Mobile Toilets: Suitable for water-scarce areas, these toilets use sawdust or straw to cover excrement, which is decomposed through natural fermentation. Regular replenishment of covering materials is necessary to reduce odors.
- Biodegradable Toilets: These toilets add microbial agents to accelerate decomposition. The treated residue can be used as organic fertilizer, making them suitable for families with high environmental protection requirements.
- Portable Flush Toilets: These require a stable water supply and are equipped with a small water tank. Regular cleaning of the fecal storage tank is necessary, making them suitable for rural families with sufficient water sources.
- Solar-Powered Toilets: These utilize solar heating to promote decomposition, offering energy efficiency and environmental protection but at a higher cost. They are suitable for areas with better economic conditions and abundant sunlight.
II. Installation and Use Should Follow Standard Procedures
- Site Selection: Choose a flat area away from water sources and kitchens to avoid contaminating groundwater and affecting the living environment.
- Installation: Place the toilet steadily and connect the sewage pipes. Check that facilities such as the toilet and sink are functioning properly to ensure smooth drainage.
- Use: Maintain hygiene by flushing promptly after use to avoid blockages. Regularly clean the trash can to prevent odor diffusion.
III. Maintenance Management Should Be Carried Out Regularly
- Cleaning and Disinfection: Wipe the inner walls, floor, and toilet with diluted environmental disinfectant weekly to avoid corrosion from strong acids or alkalis.
- Fecal Storage Tank Inspection: Check the capacity of the fecal storage tank every 1-2 weeks to avoid overfilling, which can affect use. Dry toilets require timely replenishment of covering materials.
- Pipe Unclogging: Regularly inspect the sewage pipes for blockages and unclog them promptly to prevent sewage overflow.
IV. Anti-Tipping Measures Should Be Adapted to Local Conditions
- Ground Anchor Fixation: Use expansion screws or ground anchor pins to connect fixing chains at the four corners of the toilet. Lay gravel or wooden boards on soft ground.
- Windbreak Ropes and Diagonal Bracing: Install windbreak ropes on the top and use a 'well' pattern diagonal bracing method to enhance stability in strong winds.
- Additional Weight Scheme: Place sandbags or water tanks filled with clean water on both sides of the toilet. The weight should be evenly distributed to avoid tilting on one side.
- Regular Inspection: Check the fixing devices daily during activities. Reinforce them in advance when wind or rain warnings are issued. If tilting is detected, stop using immediately and refix.
