Roundup: Creative Container Stations Reinventing Former Testing Booths (Part 1)
- Gubei Station
On a mild winter day along Huangjincheng Road in Changning District, Shanghai, ginkgo trees turn gold. Yellow and green leaves scatter across the pedestrian-street paving. With shops on both sides and a comfortable spatial scale, the place feels made for leisurely wandering. At a corner of the pedestrian street stands a neat little house. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors face passersby; its warm yellow frame blends with the overall look of Huangjincheng Road. This is the "RongâGubei Station."
Few residents or passersby realize it is a container building. Today's container architecture is no longer the metal box of old stereotypesâit can be rich in design.
In 2020, commissioned by the relevant authorities, our company took on the Gubei Station project. The design intent was an open platform that shows the neighborhood's charm and promotes co-governanceâa shared space for community businesses and a lively stage where everyone can create.

- Changzhou "Jingxiaoyi" Outdoor Worker Station
On the morning of October 11, 2022, outdoor worker stations at Wanda Plaza and Global Harbor in Xinbei District held unveiling ceremonies. This marked the full completion and opening of Xinbei District Federation of Trade Unions' key "3+3" outdoor worker station demonstration sitesâinvested at USD $138,889âcovering three commercial districts (Dino Water Town, Wanda Plaza, and Global Harbor) and three logistics parks (Jumeng Logistics, ZTO Express, and Binjiang New Materials Industrial Park).
The station sits in the densest delivery-rider flow area of Wanda Plaza and was converted from shipping containers. To ease uncivil and unsafe behavior such as curb parking and climbing guardrails by delivery riders, related departments added two sidewalk ramp entrances and exits and 39 dedicated outdoor-worker parking spaces. Beyond basic services, the station posts contact numbers for Sanjing Subdistrict functional officesâespecially a dedicated line for rapid handling of traffic accidents for delivery and courier ridersâgreatly helping the riders.

- Longma Outdoor Worker Station
Longmatan District Federation of Trade Unions invested over USD $111,000 to build 16 outdoor worker stations on streets, in residential areas, and at public-transit stops where outdoor workers gather. Each station's style reflects local character with a warm theme. All are equipped with air conditioning, microwave ovens, water dispensers, lockers, tables and chairs, and more, offering drinking water, hot meals, rest, and phone charging for sanitation workers, couriers, ride-hailing drivers, delivery riders, and other outdoor workersâeffectively closing the "last mile" of worker services.

- Zhoushan Changzhi Island Ruxin Container Station
Along the greenway, two industrial-style container stations sit at either end of the waterfront section, offering seating, platforms, drinking water, restrooms, vending machines, and other amenities. The blue-and-white container stations echo sky and clouds with strong visual impactâperfect for photos. Ruxin Greenway is a major urban sports and leisure amenity for Zhoushan as a tourism city. The Wave Path draws on ocean-wave motifs and layered blues to form cascading wave effects that bring the sea's vitality to life; the lake-blue path melts into the azure sky in the distance. On Ruxin Greenway, when you tire of walking, you can rest a while, take in the view, catch your breath, and set out again.

- Zhijiang Red Station · Citizen Forest Station
On the north bank of the Qiantang River near the Nanxing section, many residents notice two uniquely shaped stations converted from containers near Citizen Forest and Baita Park. These are not commercial "viral shops," but among the most popular check-in spots in the district's public space. The two riverside community service stations are named "Zhijiang Red Station · Citizen Forest Station" and "Zhijiang Red Station · Baita Station." With their distinctive character, at the "golden boot tip" of Shangcheng's "Golden Boot," they offer residents, visitors, and community members shared-plus-personalized services such as visits and learning, leisure reading, and emergency support.

- Warm Bee Station
To deepen care for couriers through the "Warm Bee Action," Nanwan Subdistrict responded quickly: after setting up 58 Warm Bee stations, it recently completed the first container Warm Bee station in Lingbei Residential Compound, Danzhutou Communityâadding further coverage for community service across the subdistrict.
The community Warm Bee station not only offers free food and tea to courier riders, but also equips the space with microwave ovens, water heaters, books, phone chargers, umbrellas, first-aid kits, and other appliances and emergency tools. In hot summers riders can stop by to rest and cool down; in winter they can drink hot water and eat hot meals, and also read and recharge mentally. The subdistrict and community hope this rest stop will pass warmth to courier riders and show the community's care.

- Guangzhou Yuexiu District East Riverside Community Service Station
The station sits at the southeast corner of Lin Zexu Park, beside the Pearl River and next to the greenway, echoing the Dashatou cruise pier. About 30 square meters, it is a container structure with floor-to-ceiling glass. Inside are five function zonesâ"Red Book Bar," "History Mini-Theater," "Dual-Micro Chain Shop," "Convenience Service Area," and "Shared @ Space"âoffering more than twenty services including free drinking water, microwave ovens, refrigerators, shared power banks, and first-aid kits.
