Residential Container House Size Diagram

Admin September 16, 2026

Residential container houses come in a variety of common sizes, depending on the type of container and the method of assembly.

International Standard Container Sizes

Internationally, dry cargo containers are available in different specifications, with their internal dimensions determining the basic space of container houses.

  • 20-foot container: The internal dimensions are 5898mm (length) × 2352mm (width) × 2390mm (height). This size of container house has relatively limited space, suitable for single or double occupancy. It can be simply renovated to include functional areas such as a bedroom, a small kitchen, and a bathroom.
  • 40-foot container: The internal dimensions are 12024mm (length) × 2352mm (width) × 2390mm (height). The space is relatively spacious, meeting the needs of multiple occupants. It can be planned into multiple functional areas, such as a living room, bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom, providing a relatively high level of living comfort.
  • 40-foot high cube container: The internal volume is 12024mm (length) × 2352mm (width) × 2680mm (height). Compared to the 40-foot container, its height is increased, adding vertical indoor space. It allows for the installation of a loft or higher-level renovation designs, improving space utilization.

Domestic General Standard Sizes

  • Domestically, the general standard size of container houses is 6 meters in length, 3 meters in width, and 2.9 meters in height. The export standard size is 6 meters in length, 2.4 meters in width, and 2.9 meters in height. These sizes of container houses are commonly seen in temporary accommodation scenarios such as construction sites and wilderness camping. They can be combined with functional modules according to needs, such as shower modules and toilet modules.

Sizes After Assembly

By assembling multiple containers, larger residential container houses can be created. For example, after assembling three 40-foot containers, the dimensions can reach 11.8m × 6.75m × 2.8m, with a usable area of 80 square meters, meeting the needs of family living. Functional areas such as a living room, bedrooms, and a kitchen can be reasonably planned. There are also expandable container houses, with a combined size of 3m × 6m × 3m (width × length × height) and an expanded size of 5.5m × 6m × 3m (width × length × height), increasing the indoor area from 18 square meters to 33 square meters.
