Can the Toilet Position Be Moved During Bathroom Renovation?
Admin October 22, 2026
The position of the toilet (stool) in a bathroom can be moved during renovation, but it depends on the situation and certain conditions must be met.

Small-Distance Relocation (10 - 15 cm)
A toilet offset connector can be used. This method is relatively low-cost and easy to install. However, when installing the offset connector, it is essential to pay attention to the pipe slope. Ensure that the pipe has a certain slope to prevent blockages during subsequent use.
Large-Distance Relocation (Over 15 cm)
- Raising the Floor: Build a new platform to bury the pipes. The pipe diameter should be at least 110 mm, and the slope should be maintained between 2% and 3%. However, this method sacrifices some ceiling height and may not be suitable for bathrooms with low ceilings.
- Using a Wall-Hung Toilet: The pipes run along the wall, eliminating the need to raise the floor. This is suitable for relocations of more than 50 cm. Wall-hung toilets not only save space but also have a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, although the installation cost is relatively high.
- Modifying Pipes Downstairs: This requires obtaining the neighbor's consent and conducting a new waterproofing test. Since modifying pipes downstairs may affect the waterproofing of the neighbor's bathroom, it is crucial to ensure proper waterproofing to avoid future leakage problems.
Special Bathroom Situations
Sunken bathrooms are more flexible, allowing direct modification of the pipes within the backfill layer. This generally involves less construction difficulty and has a smaller impact on the overall bathroom structure.
Other Considerations for Moving the Toilet Position
- Consider Bathroom Size: If the bathroom is small, moving the toilet may disrupt the spatial layout and make the bathroom feel even more cramped. In such cases, moving the toilet may not be feasible.
- Water Supply and Drainage Pipes: Before moving, turn off the water supply and disconnect the water pipes. Carefully consider the location of the drainage pipes to avoid damaging the existing pipes.
- Follow Basic Principles: Avoid moving the toilet unless necessary. For short-distance relocations, ensure a pipe slope of 3% - 5% to prevent blockages. All pipe connections must be tightly sealed. After relocation, reapply the waterproof layer and conduct a closed-water test. Avoid multiple bends or horizontal pipe layouts as much as possible. Excessive relocation of the toilet (e.g., more than one meter) can easily lead to blockages because the longer the drainpipe, the weaker the drainage capacity, and the more likely it is for waste to accumulate at the bends.
