Can the Toilet Be Moved During Renovation?

Admin September 28, 2026

During toilet renovation, the toilet position can be moved, but appropriate methods need to be selected based on specific circumstances, and legality should be noted.

I. Toilet Relocation Methods

  1. Short-distance relocation (10 - 15 cm)
    A toilet offset connector can be used. It is low-cost and easy to install, achieving position adjustment by extending the sewage pipe. However, it should be noted that when the relocation distance exceeds 15 cm or the number of elbows increases, insufficient pipe slope can easily lead to an increased risk of blockage, so the usage scenario should be carefully evaluated.

  2. Long-distance relocation (over 15 cm)

    • Raising the floor: By building a new floor platform to lay the pipes, the following conditions need to be met:
      • The pipe diameter should be at least 110 mm to ensure sewage discharge capacity;
      • The slope should be maintained at 2% - 3% to maintain water flow speed;
      • If the relocation exceeds 20 cm, the floor should be raised by 12 cm to increase the slope, but this will sacrifice floor height.
    • Wall-mounted drainage: The pipes are laid along the wall surface, eliminating the need to raise the floor, which is suitable for relocation distances of over 50 cm. However, a false wall needs to be built to hide the pipes, which may affect the aesthetics of the space.
    • Modifying pipes downstairs: The consent of the downstairs neighbor is required, and a new waterproofing test should be carried out. This method involves neighbor coordination and is relatively difficult to implement.
  3. Sunken bathroom
    If the bathroom has a sunken structure, the pipe position can be directly adjusted within the backfill layer, offering high flexibility. However, it is necessary to ensure that the thickness and slope of the backfill layer meet the standards.

II. Legality Considerations

  1. Conditions for legal relocation

    • Obtain written consent from neighbors and the property management;
    • The sewage treatment system should comply with regulations to avoid polluting the public environment;
    • Waterproofing measures should be in place, and there should be no leakage after a closed-water test.
  2. Legal risks

    • Unauthorized construction without consent or leakage caused by relocation that pollutes the neighbor's house may result in legal liability.

III. Key Recommendations

  • Prioritize short-distance relocation: If the relocation demand is small, prioritize using a toilet offset connector to balance cost and practicality.
  • Comprehensively evaluate long-distance relocation: Choose to raise the floor or use wall-mounted drainage based on floor height and space layout to avoid blockage due to insufficient slope.
  • Strictly follow legal procedures: Be sure to communicate with neighbors and the property management before construction and keep written consent documents to ensure compliance.
