Reinforced Concrete Prefabricated Panel Houses
Reinforced concrete prefabricated panel houses are structures built primarily using prefabricated panels, featuring specific structural characteristics, a development history, and a current status.

Structural Characteristics
Prefabricated panels are cement components manufactured in factories. During production, wooden molds are first nailed together, followed by the placement of steel reinforcement and the pouring of cement to form the panels, which come in two types: solid and hollow. The hollow structure achieves lightweighting by reducing the non-load-bearing concrete, while the solid structure offers higher strength and stability. During construction, the cement panels are prepared in advance at the factory and then transported to the site for assembly using cranes, resulting in faster construction speeds compared to traditional methods.
Development History
This building form originated in the early 20th century and was widely adopted in residential construction in China before 1985. With advancements in building technology, cast-in-place concrete and prefabricated buildings have gradually replaced traditional prefabricated panel houses. Prefabricated buildings utilize modular factory-prefabricated components, such as CMC composite modular buildings, which enhance seismic resistance through integrated steel-concrete pouring and reduce construction periods by 30% compared to traditional methods.
Existing Issues
Existing prefabricated panel houses generally suffer from weak seismic resistance due to poor structural integrity and ductility, making them prone to damage during earthquakes. Their sound insulation and thermal insulation performance are also inadequate, as the cavities in hollow prefabricated panels and the material properties of solid panels hinder effective sound and heat barrier functions. With a service life of approximately 30-50 years, these panels are prone to aging and cracking over time, affecting the safety and functionality of the houses.
Current Status and Policies
Since 2022, China has implemented renovation policies focusing on repairing and upgrading prefabricated panel houses, with demolition reserved only for buildings that meet hazardous standards. Measures such as structural reinforcement and improved sound and thermal insulation are taken to extend the service life of these houses and enhance living safety. However, some regions in southern China still use cement prefabricated panels for construction, likely due to factors such as cost and construction speed.
