Refrigerated Container House Transformation

Admin September 15, 2026

The transformation of refrigerated container houses requires comprehensive consideration from multiple aspects such as structural reinforcement, anti-corrosion and thermal insulation, functional zoning, and eco-friendly design. Here are the specific transformation points:

1. Structural Reinforcement and Anti-Corrosion Treatment
The traditional refrigerated container has a relatively large spacing between the longitudinal beams of the bottom frame. Using it directly as a living space can lead to insufficient floor stiffness. During transformation, C-shaped steel purlins should be installed between the bottom beams to evenly distribute the load to the main beams, ensuring structural stability even when stacked up to three layers. At the same time, the surface of the container body should undergo shot blasting and rust removal treatment, and be coated with zinc-rich primer and polyurethane topcoat to form a protective system, enabling the steel to maintain an effective lifespan of over 15 years in environments with northwest wind and sand and temperature differences.

2. Optimization of Thermal Insulation Performance
The thermal bridge effect of the metal container wall is a challenge for thermal insulation. The conventional approach is to attach insulation boards on the inner side, but thermal conduction channels are easily formed at the steel framework. An improved solution is to adopt a broken-bridge lining structure: fill hard polyurethane foam between the steel framework and the inner wall panels, and install rubber thermal insulation pads at the connections of the keels, which can reduce the heat exchange efficiency between the inside and outside of the container by about 40%. For example, in camp dormitory projects, through this treatment, the indoor temperature can be 8 to 10 degrees Celsius higher than the outside in winter without heating, reducing the energy consumption of heating equipment.

3. Functional Zoning and Space Utilization
The interior space of a container is limited, and it is necessary to achieve maximum functionality through reasonable planning. For example, a 15-square-meter container home uses a foldable custom-made bed that serves as a sofa during the day and unfolds into a double bed at night; the kitchen adopts a linear design with upper and lower spaces made into cabinets; the bedroom walls are filled with arc-shaped storage cabinets to improve storage efficiency. In addition, lifting rods can be installed to connect the four corners of the roof to enhance indoor lighting and ventilation, or solar panels can be installed to solve the electricity problem.

4. Eco-Friendly and Recycling Design
The core eco-friendly value of container houses lies in the full-lifecycle recycling of materials. A single standard 20-foot container consumes about 1.2 tons of steel, and the carbon emissions of a concrete temporary house of the same area are 2.3 times that. During transformation, the disassembly and assembly loss rate should be controlled within 5%, and modular design should be adopted to enable overall lifting and relocation. For example, an integrated self-circulating sewage system: a sewage collection tank and a gravity separator are installed at the bottom of the container. The gray water is precipitated and filtered for vegetation irrigation, and the black water is converted into liquid fertilizer through microbial fermentation, achieving a water self-sufficiency rate of over 70%.

5. Personalized and Aesthetic Design
The transformation can be carried out with personalized design according to the usage scenario and aesthetic needs. For example, a container home in the forest adopts a dark blue tone with natural wood interior decoration, and a terrace and solar panels are installed on the roof; a container house in the suburbs has its exterior walls painted black, paired with natural wood interior and large areas of glass to create a minimalist style. In addition, a loft effect can be achieved through stacking and combination, or custom sizes can be made to meet specific needs.
