Foreigners Buying Container Houses
Admin September 15, 2026
Foreign consumers purchasing container houses mainly include low-income individuals with urgent housing needs, rural living enthusiasts, self-built housing investors, and enterprises or project parties with a demand for rapid construction, such as operators of online celebrity homestays and pop-up stores, as well as relevant parties in regions like Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East where there are housing shortages or密集 (intensive) construction projects are being carried out.

- Low-income individuals: In the European and American markets, the number of construction workers is decreasing, and housing prices are rising year by year. Chinese prefabricated houses, even after being shipped overseas and with added tariffs, cost less than one-third of traditional houses. For example, the 40-foot foldable house purchased by American bloggers Shelly and her husband had a body price of $15,800. After adding shipping costs, tariffs, and other fees, the total landed cost was $28,689, equivalent to just over 200,000 RMB. For some low-income individuals, this price is highly attractive and can meet their housing needs.
- Rural living enthusiasts: This group yearns for a rural lifestyle and pursues personalized and unique living experiences. Container houses offer diverse and unrestricted designs and have a wide range of applications, being seen both within urban areas and in the heart of forests. For instance, a foreign couple purchased an oversized container in the suburbs and transformed it into a mini home. The deformable open design is full of the luxury and design sense of a "Transformer", satisfying their yearning for rural living.
- Self-built housing investors: The comprehensive cost of Chinese prefabricated houses is only one-third to half of that of local construction in Europe and America. This significant price difference attracts a large number of self-built housing investors to place orders. They can acquire property at a lower cost by purchasing Chinese container houses, thereby obtaining investment returns.
- Enterprises or project parties: In emerging markets, Africa has long faced a housing shortage. Southeast Asia has seen intensive large-scale projects such as port expansions and railway constructions. In the Middle East, countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are undertaking new city constructions, all of which require a large number of rapidly constructed and cost-controllable buildings. The characteristics of rapid installation and low cost of Chinese container houses precisely meet the needs of these enterprises or project parties. Additionally, some commercial venues like online celebrity homestays and pop-up stores can acquire a house with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, a smart kitchen, and a bathroom at a relatively low cost, attracting relevant operators to make purchases.
