Intelligent Mobile Toilets in Pudong New Area

Admin October 11, 2026

Pudong New Area has carried out multiple updates and upgrades in intelligent mobile toilets, covering various aspects such as facility optimization, convenience-oriented design, and smart transformation.

I. Facility Updates and Humanized Design of Mobile Public Toilets

In 2024, Pudong New Area procured and updated seven mobile public toilets located at Puyi Road-Pu'ao Road, Yongtai Road Bus Stop 572, and Dongsan Street-Jiaonan Road, among others. The new public toilets strictly set up male and female toilet compartments independently in proportion and are equipped with separate third toilets and barrier-free access to meet the needs of different groups of people. Some public toilets use soft colors such as light beige and light brown as the base, combined with dark blue frames and local embellishments, blending naturally with the surrounding environment and enhancing visual comfort.

In terms of convenience-oriented design, the ordinary toilet compartments are fully equipped with facilities, and special “age-friendly and child-friendly toilet compartments” are created. The toilet compartment doors are equipped with electronic screens that display the usage status in real time, avoiding the embarrassment of pushing the door by mistake. The mobile public toilet at the intersection of Century Avenue and Weifang Road has also added a “sanitation workers' rest station,” providing facilities such as refrigerators, shower rooms, microwave ovens, and charging ports for sanitation workers, demonstrating care for frontline workers.

II. Typical Applications and Technical Architecture of Smart Public Toilets

The public toilet at Shenjiang South Road-Pailou East Road is a benchmark case of smart public toilets in Pudong New Area. It displays data such as temperature, humidity, and foot traffic in real time through electronic screens and introduces intelligent cleaning robots to automatically disinfect the compartments. Managers can remotely regulate the ventilation system and monitor the remaining amount of toilet paper through a cloud platform, achieving refined management.

This public toilet takes the Internet of Things technology as the core and builds a three-layer closed-loop system consisting of the perception layer, the transmission layer, and the application layer:

  • Perception layer: Sensors are used to collect environmental data (such as temperature, humidity, and air quality) and equipment status (such as the remaining amount of toilet paper and water and electricity consumption) in real time;
  • Transmission layer: Wireless communication technology is used to upload the data to the cloud platform;
  • Application layer: Based on data analysis, functions such as environmental regulation (such as automatic ventilation), resource optimization (such as toilet paper replenishment warnings), safety warnings (such as abnormal stay monitoring), and user guidance (such as empty space navigation) are realized.

III. Social Value of Intelligent Mobile Toilets

The intelligent mobile toilets in Pudong New Area have not only improved the level of public health services but also promoted refined urban governance through facility upgrades and smart transformation. For example, the data analysis capability of smart public toilets can optimize the layout planning of public toilets and reduce resource waste; the age-friendly and child-friendly design and barrier-free access reflect social inclusiveness and help build an all-age-friendly city.
