How to Soundproof a Prefabricated Slab House

Admin September 18, 2026

Soundproofing a prefabricated slab house can be achieved through various methods, and the appropriate solution should be selected based on the budget, type of noise, and house structure.

  1. Basic Soundproofing Techniques
If the budget is limited, specific soundproofing techniques can be employed to reduce noise transmission by optimizing materials and structure. These techniques are relatively low-cost, can effectively reduce noise by about 50%, and have an overall thickness of no more than 10 centimeters, making them suitable for scenarios with low ceiling height requirements and a focus on basic soundproofing effects.

  2. Upgraded Soundproofing Solutions
For noise transmitted through floor vibrations, such as footsteps or the dragging of heavy objects, shock-absorbing springs and polymer damping soundproofing adhesives can be installed between the ceiling and joists. This technique achieves efficient soundproofing by blocking the transmission of vibration energy. It is commonly used in professional settings like KTVs and recording studios. In home renovations, the cost per square meter may exceed a thousand yuan, and it will occupy 15cm of ceiling height, so the trade-off between ceiling height and soundproofing needs should be considered.

  3. Targeted Treatment for Specific Noise Sources
If the house is near a railway station, highway, or square dance gathering area, it is necessary to address mixed low-frequency and high-frequency noise. For windows, it is recommended to use insulated laminated glass (dry-laminated process), whose multi-layer structure can effectively weaken sound waves. For window opening methods, casement windows are preferred as they have better sealing than sliding windows, further reducing noise infiltration.

  4. Auxiliary Soundproofing Measures
Enhance soundproofing effects through soft furnishings:

  • Walls: Install soft packs or add soundproofing panels. If wallpaper is to be applied, a soundproofing layer can be embedded inside.
  • Doors and Windows: Thicken bedroom doors and add sealing strips to reduce sound leakage through door gaps.
  • Curtains: Choose heavy-duty curtains to utilize their sound-absorbing properties and reduce noise.
  1. Phenolic Foam Board Ceiling
Phenolic foam boards, as soundproofing materials, are lightweight, fire-resistant, and sound-absorbing. They can be fixed to the ceiling with light steel joists and installed either by direct adhesion or by nailing them into the middle of the ceiling, followed by plastering and covering with gypsum board. This solution forms a soundproofing layer that effectively blocks airborne sound transmission.

  2. Soundproofing Pad Ceiling
Select foam soundproofing pads with built-in foam chambers. These pads are inexpensive and only about 1 centimeter thick, making them suitable for houses with low ceiling heights. When noise enters the foam chambers, it reflects and consumes energy within the chambers, thereby weakening the sound wave intensity. Before renovation, assess the noise sources to ensure coverage of key areas.

  3. Wall Structure Optimization

  • Thin Wall Treatment: If the wall soundproofing is poor, soundproofing panels can be installed before applying wallpaper, or full-wall cabinets can be designed to increase wall thickness.
  • Exterior Walls: Add insulation layers to exterior walls and embed soundproofing panels to simultaneously improve insulation and soundproofing performance.
  • Soft Pack Design: Increase the sound-absorbing area of walls by using soft furnishings materials like wood veneers and heavy curtains to reduce noise reflection.
