Prefabricated Slab House Roof Garden

Admin September 19, 2026

A roof garden can be constructed on the roof of a prefabricated slab house if the load requirements are met.

Load Standards: Prefabricated flat roofs are generally classified into three load standards. Taking the central and southern regions as an example, Class I slabs have a load capacity of 400 kilograms per square meter, Class II slabs have a load capacity of 700 kilograms per square meter, and Class III slabs have a load capacity of 1000 kilograms per square meter. After the roof is constructed, the self-weight of the roof is generally around 250 to 280 kilograms per square meter, which includes the self-weight of the prefabricated slabs, the weight of the waterproof and thermal insulation layers on the slabs, and the weight of the plastering or suspended ceiling below the slabs. From the data, it can be seen that as long as Class II slabs or higher are used for the roof, the roof will have a certain surplus load-bearing capacity, which is usually sufficient to meet the load requirements for constructing a roof garden. For example, if Class II slabs are used for the roof with a load capacity of 700 kilograms per square meter, subtracting the self-weight of the roof (250 to 280 kilograms per square meter), the remaining load-bearing capacity can be used to support the weight of plants, planting soil, and landscape facilities in the roof garden.

Applicability: For old buildings with prefabricated slab structures, constructing a roof garden offers numerous advantages, provided that the load requirements are met. Roof gardens provide excellent cooling and thermal insulation effects, effectively reducing indoor temperatures in summer and decreasing the use of air conditioning and other cooling equipment, thereby lowering energy consumption. At the same time, they enhance the environment, add green landscapes to the city, purify the air, and improve the local microclimate. Additionally, roof gardens enrich the city's panoramic views, compensate for the green space occupied by buildings, and increase the city's green coverage rate, making them a roof form worthy of promotion.

Renovation Cases: There have been successful cases of renovating old houses with prefabricated slab structures and adding roof gardens on the show "Dream Home Makeover". During the renovation process, in response to issues such as large temperature differences in the old house, the designer adopted measures such as thermal insulation coatings on the roof, which not only resolved the temperature difference problem but also ultimately achieved a single-family renovation with a roof garden, fully demonstrating the feasibility of constructing a roof garden on the roof of a prefabricated slab house.
