Load-Bearing Walls in Prefabricated Slab Houses
Admin September 19, 2026
The following are the methods for identifying load-bearing walls in prefabricated slab houses, as well as precautions for hidden danger inspection and renovation:

Methods for Identifying Load-Bearing Walls
- Thickness Identification: Load-bearing walls are typically over 240mm thick, which is one of the intuitive bases for distinguishing between load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls.
- Assistance from House Layout Structure: If the indoor layout is rectangular, the longer side walls are highly likely to be load-bearing walls; the walls at both ends of the supporting beams are also load-bearing walls.
- Nature of Exterior Walls: Although exterior walls of buildings do not directly bear the weight of the floors, they need to support the weight of the walls on each floor, so exterior walls are essentially load-bearing walls.
- Support Relationship with Prefabricated Slabs: Walls that directly support prefabricated slabs are the main load-bearing structures, that is, walls with prefabricated slabs placed on them are load-bearing walls.
- Drawing Annotations: When distinguishing through house layout drawings, walls marked with thick black lines in the drawings are all load-bearing walls.
- Assistance from Structural Types: In brick-concrete structure houses, almost all walls are load-bearing walls; in frame structure houses, exterior walls are generally load-bearing walls, and interior walls are mostly non-load-bearing walls.
Hidden Danger Inspection of Load-Bearing Walls
- Crack Inspection: Focus on checking whether there are vertical cracks, diagonal cracks in load-bearing walls, or whether there are cracks and downward deformation above the lintels of door and window openings.
- Weathering at Wall Bases: Check whether the bricks or masonry at the base of the bottom walls show severe weathering, peeling, or loosening, as such problems may weaken the load-bearing capacity of the walls.
- Lack of Seismic Structures: If the house is a brick-concrete prefabricated slab structure of three or more stories and is not equipped with ring beams and constructional columns, its overall seismic resistance and safety will be significantly reduced.
Precautions for Renovating Load-Bearing Walls
- Prohibition of Demolition and Modification: Load-bearing walls cannot be randomly demolished or modified; only non-load-bearing walls are allowed to be renovated, otherwise structural safety hazards may be triggered.
- Verification of Violations: It is necessary to verify whether there have been actions such as unauthorized demolition of load-bearing walls, opening door and window openings in load-bearing walls, or enlarging the sizes of openings during the use of the house, as such operations will undermine structural stability.
Summary: The identification of load-bearing walls in prefabricated slab houses requires a comprehensive analysis combining thickness, house layout, structural type, and drawing annotations; hidden danger inspection should focus on cracks, weathering at wall bases, and seismic structures; during renovation, regulations must be strictly followed to avoid damaging the load-bearing structures.
