How to Install Ceilings in Prefabricated Slab Houses
The ceiling installation in prefabricated slab houses requires selecting appropriate methods based on the type of space. Common approaches include gypsum board ceilings and integrated ceilings, with specific operations tailored to the characteristics of prefabricated slabs and safety regulations.

Gypsum Board Ceilings
The ceilings of old prefabricated slab houses often have uneven surfaces. If putty is applied directly, the base layer may become unstable in the future, leading to peeling or detachment of the putty layer. Gypsum board ceilings can adjust the flatness through a keel framework, forming a stable base layer. Covering with gypsum boards and applying putty afterward effectively solves the issue of uneven ceilings. During construction, pay attention to the following:
- Keel Installation: Opt for light steel keels, which have high strength and are less prone to deformation. Adjust the keel spacing according to the ceiling height difference to ensure a flat framework.
- Fixing Method: Use expansion bolts to secure the keels to the prefabricated slab structure, avoiding direct nailing into the slab to prevent damage to its structural integrity.
- Crack Prevention: Leave a 3-5mm gap at the joints of gypsum boards, fill with joint compound, and then apply kraft paper or anti-crack tape to reduce the risk of cracking in the future.

Old Prefabricated Slab Balconies
- Load-Bearing Assessment: Confirm the load-bearing capacity of the prefabricated slab balcony, referring to design specifications (e.g., load per square meter ≤ 250kg) to avoid structural damage from overloading.
- Material Selection: Prioritize lightweight materials such as aluminum alloy or PVC to reduce pressure on the prefabricated slabs. For complex shapes, communicate with the manufacturer in advance to customize modules and avoid on-site processing that could damage the slabs.
- Installation Method: Use special hooks to fix the ceiling to the prefabricated slab structure. Scaffolding or a lift may be required for assistance during construction. The installation period is approximately 3-5 days, with costs 20%-30% higher than those of ordinary ceilings.
- Surface Treatment: Apply a waterproof coating (e.g., polyurethane waterproof paint) to the surface of the prefabricated slabs to prevent moisture penetration and ceiling deformation.
Hollow Cement Prefabricated Slab Bedrooms
- Fixing Position: Install the ceiling on the concrete framework of the prefabricated slabs rather than directly on the hollow slabs to avoid cracks caused by insufficient load-bearing areas.
- Weight Control: A single prefabricated slab can bear approximately 120kg. The total weight of ceiling materials (including keels, panels, and lighting fixtures) should be ≤ 80kg per square meter. Opt for ultra-thin aluminum ceiling tiles (thickness ≤ 0.6mm).
- Reinforcement Measures: Pre-embed expansion bolts in the concrete framework and connect the keels with angle steel to distribute the ceiling weight across multiple load-bearing points, enhancing safety.
