Prefabricated Roof Panels for House Construction

Admin September 18, 2026

Using prefabricated roof panels for house construction was a common practice in early 20th-century architecture, but it has drawbacks such as easy cracking at joints, weak earthquake resistance, and poor sound and heat insulation. Cast-in-place concrete and prefabricated buildings have gradually replaced traditional prefabricated panel houses.

Definition and Production of Prefabricated Panels

Prefabricated panels are concrete prefabricated components produced and processed at a prefabrication yard and then directly transported to the construction site for installation. During production, a hollow mold is first made using wooden planks. After placing steel bars in the hollow part of the mold, cement is poured to fill the hollow section. After drying, the wooden planks are knocked off to obtain the prefabricated panel. There are two types of prefabricated panels: solid and hollow. The hollow structure achieves lightweighting by reducing the non-load-bearing concrete, thereby lowering material costs and transportation difficulties.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Prefabricated Panels

Advantages: The production process of prefabricated panels is standardized, allowing for mass production, high construction efficiency, and shortened construction periods. The hollow structure reduces the self-weight, imposing lower requirements on the foundation's bearing capacity, which is suitable for early architectural technology conditions.
Disadvantages: The joints between two floor panels are prone to cracking, affecting the structural integrity. Existing prefabricated panel houses generally have issues such as weak earthquake resistance, poor sound and heat insulation, and a service life of about 30 - 50 years, making it difficult to meet modern architectural requirements for safety and comfort.

Alternative Solutions in Modern Architecture

With the development of architectural technology, cast-in-place concrete and prefabricated buildings have gradually replaced traditional prefabricated panel houses. Cast-in-place structures, created by pouring concrete on-site, result in better overall integrity and sturdier houses, effectively solving problems such as joint cracking and weak earthquake resistance. Prefabricated buildings, on the other hand, involve prefabricating components in a factory and assembling them on-site, balancing construction efficiency and structural performance, and becoming the mainstream direction in modern architecture.

Renovation Policies for Prefabricated Panel Houses

Since 2022, China has implemented renovation policies, focusing on repairing and renovating prefabricated panel houses and only demolishing buildings that meet the criteria for dangerous houses. Renovation work typically includes reinforcing the structure, improving sound and heat insulation performance, and updating pipelines to extend the building's service life and enhance living safety.
