Prefabricated Pile Diameter for Residential Buildings
When constructing a six-story residential building, the selection of the prefabricated pile diameter for the foundation should be based on geological conditions and construction requirements. Under normal geological conditions, prefabricated pipe piles with diameters ranging from 400mm to 500mm are commonly used; when the foundation bearing capacity is weak or the building includes a basement or garage, piles with diameters of 600mm to 800mm should be selected.

Pile Diameter Selection Under Normal Geological Conditions
Under ordinary geological conditions (such as clay or sandy soil with moderate bearing capacity), the foundation load of a six-story residential building is relatively clear. Typically, prefabricated pipe piles with diameters of 400mm to 500mm can meet the requirements. This range represents the most widely used specifications in engineering practice. For example, pipe piles with diameters of Φ400mm and Φ500mm have single-pile bearing capacities that can cover the vertical load requirements of conventional multi-story residential buildings, while offering high construction efficiency and controllable costs. Specific selection should consider the following factors:
- Total Building Load: The total weight of a six-story building (including structural self-weight and live loads) must be transferred to the foundation through the pile foundation. If the floor area is small or the load is evenly distributed, a Φ400mm pile is usually sufficient; if the floor area is large or there are localized concentrated loads (such as elevator shafts), a Φ500mm pile should be prioritized to enhance bearing capacity.
- Construction Feasibility: Pile-driving equipment for 400mm to 500mm piles (such as static pile drivers or hammer pile drivers) is widely available and has minimal vibration impact on the surrounding environment, making it suitable for construction in residential areas.
Pile Diameter Adjustment Under Special Geological or Construction Conditions
When the foundation bearing capacity is weak (such as in soft soil or fill layers) or the building has additional loads (such as a basement or garage), the pile diameter should be increased to improve single-pile bearing capacity or reduce the number of piles. In such cases, it is recommended to use prefabricated pipe piles with diameters of 600mm to 800mm:
- Insufficient Foundation Bearing Capacity: In soft soil foundations, small-diameter piles are prone to excessive settlement, leading to uneven building settlement. Piles with diameters of Φ600mm to Φ800mm have significantly larger cross-sectional areas, effectively dispersing loads, reducing foundation stress, and controlling settlement within allowable limits.
- Impact of Additional Loads: If the building includes a basement or garage, the foundation must withstand additional earth pressure and water pressure, with more complex load transfer paths. Large-diameter piles (such as Φ800mm) provide greater lateral friction and end resistance, enhancing the overall stability of the foundation.
Other Considerations
The selection of the prefabricated pile diameter should also consider construction techniques and costs. For example, although large-diameter piles of Φ1000mm or more have higher bearing capacities, they are difficult to construct and costly, typically used only in high-rise buildings or special projects; small-diameter piles below Φ300mm have limited bearing capacities and are not suitable for six-story buildings. Therefore, a diameter range of 400mm to 800mm is the most reasonable for six-story residential buildings.
