Prefabricated Housing Finished Products in Hong Kong

Admin September 18, 2026

Prefabricated housing finished products have significant applications in Hong Kong, primarily reflected in the 'Simplified Public Housing' project.

I. Project Background and Objectives
Hong Kong's 'Simplified Public Housing' is a new housing initiative launched in 2022, aiming to build 30,000 housing units within five years, prioritizing the housing needs of those who have been waiting for public housing for more than three years. The project utilizes Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) technology to rapidly provide affordable housing, alleviating the housing pressure on grassroots citizens. For example, in 2024, China Construction Science and Industry Corporation (CSCIC) signed the SS N520 project with the Hong Kong Architectural Services Department as a joint venture, covering four sites in Tuen Mun, Chai Wan, and Ma On Shan, providing approximately 16,000 MiC modules. Upon completion, it will offer nearly 13,000 residential units with a total construction area of 251,000 square meters.

II. Technological Advantages and Efficiency Improvements
The core advantage of prefabricated housing finished products lies in rapid installation and shortened construction periods. Modular components are prefabricated in factories and then transported to the site for installation, achieving 'arrival and installation on the same day,' significantly reducing the construction time required by traditional methods. Taking Guangdong Alu House Technology Co., Ltd. as an example, its movable houses exported to Hong Kong are used in major livelihood projects. In the first four months of 2024, the export value reached 160 million yuan, surpassing the total for the entire previous year. This efficient model not only reduces time costs but also minimizes the environmental impact of on-site construction.

III. Citizen Feedback and Living Improvements
The 'Simplified Public Housing' project has received widespread recognition from grassroots citizens. Substantial improvements in living conditions are a major highlight:

  • Mr. Zhang, a resident who moved from a sub-divided flat of less than 10 square meters in Sham Shui Po, praised the new home for its well-lit kitchen, spaciousness, and safety;
  • Mr. Lin stated that his previous home had 'no windows,' while the 'Simplified Public Housing' offers an open space, providing a better living environment for his children.
    These feedbacks demonstrate the effectiveness of prefabricated housing in addressing grassroots housing issues.

IV. Social Significance and Future Prospects
The project provides an innovative solution for Hong Kong's housing supply through standardized design and industrialized production. Its successful implementation not only eases the pressure on public housing waiting lists but also offers a reference for housing policies in similar high-density cities. With technological advancements and scale expansion, prefabricated housing is expected to play a greater role in Hong Kong's public housing sector.
