Transportation Cost of Prefabricated Housing Components

Admin September 18, 2026

The transportation cost of prefabricated housing components mainly includes horizontal transportation costs and vertical transportation costs, with specific compositions and influencing factors as follows:

Horizontal Transportation Costs Horizontal transportation costs cover the freight from the factory to the construction site and the secondary handling costs within the construction site.

  1. Freight from Factory to Construction Site: This accounts for 3.87% to 8.40% of the total selling price of the components, primarily consisting of transportation machinery costs, with labor costs accounting for a relatively small proportion. The costs are influenced by the following factors:
    • Transport Vehicle Costs: The selling or leasing prices of transport vehicles vary significantly across different regions, directly affecting transportation costs. For example, the costs of special transport vehicles are higher than those of ordinary trucks.
    • Transport Distance: Transportation costs are generally positively correlated with distance, with an economic transport radius being the distance for a round trip within half a day. Currently, due to the small scale of prefabricated buildings and insufficient standardization of components, the transport radius is excessively long, increasing costs.
    • Transport Efficiency: There is a lack of dedicated transport vehicles in China, and existing vehicles have low loading capacities and require supporting lifting equipment, resulting in low loading and unloading efficiency and further increasing costs.
  2. Secondary Handling Costs within the Construction Site: Concrete prefabricated components and metal components usually do not incur secondary handling costs as their transportation costs are already included in the quotas. These costs can be estimated based on the proportion of material costs during bidding or settled through on-site visas based on actual occurrences during construction.

Vertical Transportation Costs This refers to the cost of lifting components from the ground to the installation elevation. The specific composition is not detailed but is generally related to the type of lifting equipment, floor height, and component weight.

Other Influencing Factors

  1. Packaging Costs: These include external packaging, internal packaging, and fixing costs, which are related to the shape, size, weight, and other characteristics of the components.
  2. Goods Characteristics: Special-shaped, overweight, or oversized components require special packaging or transportation methods, increasing costs.
  3. Road Conditions: Additional charges may be imposed in areas with poor road conditions or traffic congestion.
  4. Transport Vehicle Types: Special vehicles (such as low-bed semi-trailers) are suitable for large components and have higher costs than ordinary trucks.

Examples of Regional Differences Taking the Jiyang area as an example, the transportation cost of prefabricated components is calculated based on distance: approximately 5-10 yuan/㎡ within 10 kilometers, with an additional charge of 2 yuan/㎡ for each kilometer beyond 10 kilometers. This standard reflects the direct impact of transport distance on costs but does not cover complex factors such as vehicle types and component characteristics. The actual costs need to be evaluated based on specific circumstances.
