Prefabricated Gutter for Houses
The prefabricated gutter for houses is a type of finished assembled gutter that achieves roof drainage functionality through on-site installation of factory-prefabricated components, featuring convenient construction and a variety of materials.

I. Definition and Classification
Prefabricated gutters belong to the category of finished assembled gutters and, alongside cast-in-place concrete gutters, are two mainstream solutions for gutters in self-built houses. Their core function is to systematically collect rainwater through the depressed structure between two spans of the roof and discharge it into rainwater pipes. Depending on their location, gutters are classified as internal gutters (located inside the exterior wall, usually with a parapet wall) and external gutters (extending beyond the exterior wall without a parapet wall). The installation method of prefabricated gutters makes them more suitable for external gutter scenarios, but they can also be adapted to internal gutter requirements through design.
II. Material Selection
The materials for prefabricated gutters need to balance durability and construction convenience:
- Commonly used materials: These include PVC, fiberglass-reinforced plastic, aluminum alloy, galvanized iron, stainless steel, resin, etc. Among them, aluminum alloy and galvanized iron are mainstream choices for prefabricated components due to their lightweight nature and excellent rust resistance.
- Materials specifically for prefabricated components: Asbestos cement (low cost but average durability) and 0.8-millimeter-thick galvanized steel sheet (high strength and corrosion resistance) are typical materials for prefabricated gutter components. The latter is more widely used due to its superior overall performance.
III. Size Specifications
The sizes of prefabricated gutters need to meet drainage efficiency and structural safety requirements:
- Basic dimensions: It is recommended that the clear width be ≥300 millimeters, the clear height be ≥150 millimeters (minimum not less than 100 millimeters), the gutter wall thickness (unified for side walls and bottom plate) be ≥100 millimeters, and the overhang width (overall overhang of the eaves) be 600-800 millimeters.
- Optimization suggestions for rural self-built houses: It is recommended that the bottom width start from 40 centimeters, and the depth (including the waterproof layer) be ≥25 centimeters to adapt to areas with heavy rainfall or pitched roof drainage requirements.
IV. Construction Key Points
The construction of prefabricated gutters must strictly follow the following steps:
- Installation allowance: When assembling components, a 2-centimeter expansion joint should be left to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes.
- Joint treatment: Fill the expansion joint with asphalt hemp fiber and then press a metal cover plate to ensure tightness and prevent leakage.
- Waterproof test: Fill with water to two-thirds of the gutter depth and maintain for 48 hours without leakage to be qualified; the waterproof layer should be coated with polyurethane paint at least three times, with a total thickness of 2 millimeters.
- Adaptation to special environments: In cold regions, electric heating cables can be laid inside the gutter to achieve snow melting through intelligent temperature control, preventing ice and snow from blocking the drainage system.
Prefabricated gutters significantly shorten the construction period through standardized components and modular installation. At the same time, the flexibility in material selection and size design enables them to adapt to different climates and architectural requirements, making them an important solution for modern roof drainage systems.
