Prefabricated Components in Architectural Engineering

Admin September 19, 2026

Prefabricated components refer to steel, wood, or concrete building components pre-made in factories or on construction sites. They are an important material foundation for building industrialization and are widely used in prefabricated buildings and various engineering projects.

I. Definition and Standard Basis
The production of prefabricated components needs to follow the national standard "Evaluation Standard for Prefabricated Buildings" (GB/T51129-2017). Its core is to achieve standardized and large-scale production of building components through factory prefabrication. The "Several Opinions on Accelerating the Development of New Building Industrialization" jointly issued by nine departments including the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2020 further promotes the standardized production and quality management of components, emphasizing the improvement of construction efficiency and project quality through prefabricated components.

II. Main Types and Functions

  1. Structural Components

    • Beams: As horizontal load-bearing components, they support the loads of floors and roofs and transfer them to columns or walls. They are key load-bearing parts in building structures.
    • Slabs: Including floor slabs and roof slabs, they are made of prefabricated concrete or composite materials. They have the characteristics of light weight, high strength, and fast construction speed, which can significantly shorten on-site operation time.
    • Columns: Vertical load-bearing components that support the weight of beams and floors and transfer building loads to the foundation. Their prefabrication can ensure dimensional accuracy and structural stability.
  2. Building Decoration Accessories

    • Exterior Wall Panels/Interior Wall Panels: They integrate insulation and decoration functions, reduce on-site wet operations, and improve the aesthetic appeal and energy efficiency of buildings.
    • Door and Window Frames: Factory prefabrication can ensure dimensional accuracy, avoid on-site installation errors, and improve air tightness and water tightness.
    • Stairs: Prefabricated stairs can be quickly hoisted, reducing the steps of formwork erection and concrete pouring and improving construction safety.

III. Technical Advantages and Application Value
Prefabricated components achieve quality controllability through factory production, reducing on-site manual operation errors and at the same time reducing dust pollution and construction waste generation. Their construction method of "assembling like building blocks" significantly shortens the construction period. For example, prefabricated building projects can shorten the construction period by more than 30% through prefabricated components. In addition, the standardized production of prefabricated components facilitates large-scale application, promoting the transformation of the construction industry towards industrialization and green development, which is in line with the requirements of sustainable development.
