Prefabricated Assembly Houses Abroad

Admin September 18, 2026

Prefabricated assembly houses are gaining popularity abroad, primarily due to their affordability, rapid assembly, and effective solutions to housing challenges.

Affordability is a core advantage. Modular buildings manufactured in China demonstrate significant cost competitiveness in the international market. For example, 63 modular elderly care apartments exported to the UK from China were installed on-site in just two weeks after arrival, with the overall cost being significantly lower than that of similar local buildings. A couple in the US spent only $20,000 (approximately 140,000 RMB) to order an entire prefabricated house. The cost of Chinese prefabricated houses is only 40% of that of local buildings in Europe and the US, with basic models even available for direct purchase through e-commerce platforms for $30,000. This cost advantage stems from China's large-scale manufacturing capabilities and the optimized allocation of materials and labor through modular design.

High assembly efficiency shortens construction cycles. Prefabricated assembly houses transfer traditional construction processes such as ceiling installation, plumbing and electrical work, and bathroom waterproofing to factories, with fixed furniture also installed in advance. For instance, a 15-square-meter room can theoretically be ready for occupancy once the power is connected. Building blocks produced in Huanggang, Hubei, and shipped to Spain and Italy can be assembled into a 70-square-meter fully furnished house within a day. The shortest cycle from order placement to occupancy is just three months. This 'factory production + on-site assembly' model significantly reduces on-site construction time, making it particularly suitable for projects with tight deadlines.

Targeted solutions to housing supply-demand imbalances. In the US, there is a housing shortage of over 4 million units and a shortage of nearly 500,000 construction workers, making it difficult for traditional construction methods to meet demand due to high costs and slow speeds. Australia and New Zealand face persistent 'housing shortages' in remote areas due to high labor costs. Chinese prefabricated assembly houses, through standardized design and industrial production, effectively reduce reliance on on-site labor while providing rapid housing solutions at lower costs, becoming an important choice for filling market gaps.

Export data shows that from 2015 to 2025, China's prefabricated building exports increased from $1.472 billion to approximately $4.339 billion, nearly tripling in 10 years. In the first quarter of 2026, export growth reached 45%, leading all building material categories. In the first four months, Guangzhou Customs reported exports of movable houses worth 1.4 billion RMB, a year-on-year increase of 38.1%, with leading companies' export volumes exceeding last year's total. Daily shipments of trucks loaded with housing modules depart from ports such as Shenzhen and Liantang to destinations worldwide. These figures further confirm the strong demand for prefabricated assembly houses in the international market.
