Self-Building Methods for Portable Toilets

Admin October 06, 2026

There are several self-building methods for portable toilets, and you can choose the appropriate one based on your needs and material conditions:

I. Construction Using a Water Storage Tank (Fully Functional Type)

  1. Basic Structure Construction

    • Select a large water storage tank (e.g., over 100L), and use an angle grinder to cut it in half along the central axis, keeping one half as the main container.
    • Install universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden base plate to ensure mobility; fix wooden strips along the edge of the tank opening to form a frame about 20cm high, enhancing structural stability.
  2. Functional Module Installation

    • Door and Wall: Cut an opening about 60cm×40cm on the side of the tank as the door opening, and attach sponge strips on both sides to form a sealed door frame; insert transparent plastic soft panels as walls, and use the upper half of the water storage tank as an inverted roof, applying white waterproof paint to improve aesthetics.
    • Drainage System: Drill a hole in the center of the tank bottom to install a 50mm diameter drain pipe, connecting it to an external sewage tank; drill holes on the side to install a three-way joint, connecting it to the shower inlet pipe, washbasin water supply pipe, and toilet tank refill pipe respectively.
    • Sanitary Facilities: Place and fix a finished toilet, with the tank connected to the three-way joint via a hose; a small plastic washbasin can be selected and fixed on an extended bracket of the door frame.
  3. Water Storage and Heating

    • Place a small plastic bucket on the roof, drill a hole to install an inlet valve, and connect it to a bathroom heater via a pipe (heating wires need to be pre-embedded); in winter, warm water needs to be injected to prevent pipe freezing.

II. Construction Using a Water Storage Tank and a Pallet (Simple Mobile Type)

  1. Mobile Chassis Construction

    • Select a plastic pallet (e.g., a logistics pallet) as the base, drill holes at the four corners and install universal wheels with brakes to ensure a load-bearing capacity of ≥100kg.
    • Fix a small water storage tank (e.g., a 20L plastic bucket) in the center of the pallet, install a sealed cover on the tank opening, and reserve a sewage outlet and an inlet.
  2. Functional Expansion

    • Pair it with a portable toilet (e.g., a folding toilet) and place it directly on the pallet, opening the tank cover for sewage discharge; or connect a hose to an external septic tank.
    • Suitable for temporary scenarios (e.g., outdoor activities), and the water storage tank needs to be cleaned regularly.

III. Other Simple Methods (Low-Cost Renovation Type)

  1. Plastic Septic Tank + Squat Toilet
    • Purchase a finished plastic septic tank (capacity ≥ 500L), bury it underground and connect it to a squat toilet via PVC pipes; cover it with a movable wooden board on top for simple enclosure.
  2. Finished Toilet Renovation
    • Purchase a mobile toilet for elderly care, install wheels at the bottom and connect it to an underground septic tank via a sewage pipe; suitable for home courtyard renovation.
  3. Isolation Tent + Wooden Board
    • Set up a waterproof tent as the space, and use wooden boards to nail a squatting platform inside, with a plastic bucket placed below as a sewage collection container; the sewage bucket needs to be replaced regularly.

Precautions:

  • Measure the material dimensions before construction to ensure tight connections between components;
  • Maintain a slope (≥2%) for the drainage pipes to prevent blockage;
  • Regularly clean the mobile toilet to prevent odor diffusion.
