Portable Simple Toilet
Portable toilets are facilities that can be moved as a whole and provide toilet services to the public. They have advantages such as portability, modularity, and ease of transportation, and can be classified in various ways. There are also cases of simple personal fabrication.

I. Basic Definition and Characteristics A portable toilet (Portable toilet) refers to a facility that can be moved as a whole and set up in fixed or temporary locations. Its core function is to provide toilet services to the public or clients. Its greatest feature is portability, enabling it to be quickly deployed to any needed location using transportation tools and reused repeatedly. Additionally, it has modularity (it can be assembled into different sizes according to needs) and ease of transportation (its lightweight structure is suitable for various transportation methods), making it especially suitable for temporary events, disaster relief, remote areas, and other scenarios.
II. Structural Composition Portable toilets typically consist of the following parts:
- Fecal treatment system: Includes storage tanks (for collecting waste) or disposal devices (such as septic tanks or biodegradation equipment);
- Basic structure: Flooring (slip-resistant and easy to clean), walls (made of lightweight materials like metal or plastic), and roof (waterproof and heat-insulating);
- Sanitary facilities: Sanitary fixtures (such as toilets or squat pans), washing equipment (sinks, faucets), and water tanks (for storing flushing water);
- Mobility devices: Lifting hooks, towing chassis, or universal wheels (designed according to the method of movement).
III. Classification Methods
- By structural form:
- Single-unit structure: Independent units suitable for small-scale use;
- Composite structure: Multiple units combined to form large toilet clusters.
- By method of movement:
- Lifting and handling type: Requires lifting equipment for movement;
- Powered and towing type: Has its own power or can be connected to a vehicle for towing.
- By wastewater treatment method:
- Water-flush type: Requires connection to a water source and uses flushing for cleaning;
- Waterless vacuum type: Uses a vacuum pump to suction waste;
- Recirculating water-flush type: Recirculates water to save water resources;
- Dry-pack type: Collects waste in biodegradable bags and does not require a water source.
IV. Simple Personal Fabrication Examples Some individuals fabricate portable toilets using simple materials, for example:
- Base: Install universal wheels on a wooden board for easy movement;
- Waste storage device: Cut a water bucket to serve as a container and fix it to the base;
- Functional expansion: Cut the water bucket to create an entrance and exit, use aluminum-plastic panels to raise the walls, and install a bucket lid and wooden door;
- Drainage system: Connect drainage pipes and floor drains, and install a water storage tank with a water pipe connector;
- Shower facilities: Use PVC pipes to make a showerhead and pair it with a simple toilet. Such designs are low-cost but require regular waste cleanup, making them suitable for temporary or home use.
