Winter Use of Outdoor Portable Toilets

Admin October 06, 2026

Outdoor portable toilets can be used normally in winter, but insulation, anti-freezing, and maintenance measures are required to ensure stable functionality.

1. Insulation and Anti-Freezing Design

  1. Structural Insulation: The outer walls of the portable toilet are made of double-layer insulation materials, and the roof uses polyurethane foam spray insulation to avoid cold bridge effects. The walls are designed as insulation structures, and the handwashing area also has insulation functions to reduce heat loss.
  2. Anti-Freezing Devices:
    • Equipped with thermal insulation external shielding systems to address wind and freezing issues.
    • Pipes and fittings use special rubber insulation sleeves and self-regulating heating cables to prevent freezing.
    • The area around the squat toilet is filled with expanded perlite, and the trap is installed with heat tracing cables to enhance local insulation.
    • Internally equipped with air conditioners, heating devices, or radiators for intelligent temperature control. Some models can be connected to municipal heating systems.

2. Daily Maintenance and Operation Recommendations

  1. Sealed Insulation: Close ventilation openings and external doors and windows, and use materials such as straw or old quilts to block and seal them, reducing the invasion of cold air.
  2. Pipe Protection: Insulate the toilet and water pipes, and drain any remaining water when not in use (close the inlet valve and loosen the drain bolt). Antifreeze can be added to the water tank, or alcohol and salt can be mixed in to lower the freezing point.
  3. Floor Anti-Slip: Keep the toilet floor dry and clean up any standing water promptly to prevent slipping due to ice formation.

3. Response to Extreme Weather

When temperatures drop sharply below -8°C, enhanced protection is required:

  1. Cover with insulation cotton or thicken the barriers, and seal gaps around doors and windows.
  2. Prioritize the use of portable toilets with heating functions (such as models equipped with solar heating devices in Wugong Mountain Scenic Area).

4. Freezing Blockage Prevention and Handling

  1. Preventive Measures: Choose products from reputable manufacturers, as their water tanks and pipe critical parts are usually equipped with insulation layers or heating devices to reduce the probability of freezing blockage.
  2. Handling Methods: If freezing blockage occurs, slowly pour warm water over the pipes, check the power supply/pressure of the flushing system, or contact professionals to use thawing tools. It is strictly prohibited to use open flames or high-temperature equipment to directly heat the pipes to avoid damaging the structure or causing hazards.

5. Usage Precautions

  1. Prioritize choosing reputable brands with cold-resistant designs (such as models with double-layer insulated water tanks).
  2. Avoid pouring large amounts of hot water or chemical cleaners into the toilet to prevent pipe corrosion or freezing cracks due to sudden temperature changes.
  3. Scenic areas and other places can post "Low-Temperature Usage Tips" beside the toilets to guide users on proper flushing and reduce the burden on the equipment.

By implementing the above measures, outdoor portable toilets can operate stably in winter, meeting the usage needs of campsites, scenic areas, parks, and other locations.
