Outdoor Portable Toilet DIY

Admin September 24, 2026

Outdoor portable toilets can be DIY-made using plastic buckets or water storage tanks and pallets. Here are the specific methods:

Making with Plastic Buckets

  • Basic Structure Construction: Select a plastic bucket of an appropriate size. Cut it horizontally at about one-third of the bucket's height, keeping the bottom as the main container. Install wheel devices at the bottom of the bucket for easy movement. Hammer wooden strips above the cut on the bucket body to increase its height, providing space for installing other components. Create two slits on the raised wooden strips as the installation positions for the toilet door, and fix two synthetic wooden boards on the edges of the iron sheet for reinforcement, enhancing the structural stability.
  • Top and Door Making: Place the iron sheet in the middle of the raised wooden strips. Cover the top with the cut-off part of the plastic bucket. Ensure that the joints of the iron sheet overlap sufficiently to prevent peeping and protect privacy. Paint the wooden strips with anti-corrosion paint to extend their service life. Use overlapping old wooden floorboards to make the toilet door, install hinges, and test whether the door opens and closes smoothly.
  • Drainage and Water Supply System Installation: Drill holes at appropriate positions on the bucket body to install drainage holes, ensuring that sewage can be discharged smoothly. Convert a large trash can into a water storage tank, install water pipe connectors, make a showerhead with PVC pipes, and connect the main water pipe to a three-way valve to supply water to the sink, shower, and toilet separately, meeting different water needs.

Making with Water Storage Tanks and Pallets

  • Mobile Base Construction: Fix universal wheels at the four corners of the bottom of a plastic pallet to make the entire structure movable. Place the water storage tank retrieved from the garbage station on the pallet. Use an angle grinder to cut along the marked line at the top of the tank to form an open tank body, providing operating space for installing other components.
  • Tank Body Combination and Opening: Place another water storage tank with an open top upside down on the first tank body and fix the outer frame with self-tapping screws to enhance the structural stability. Cut a rectangular opening on the water storage tank to form a doorway for easy access.
  • Internal Facility Installation: Drill a hole in the floor inside the water storage tank, insert elbows and water pipes, and seal the gaps. Install a toilet and fix it with glue to ensure it is firmly installed and does not leak. Fix water pipes on the wall with clips and install a faucet. Use a stainless-steel basin to make a sink and fix it below. Connect the water inlet pipe of the toilet tank and the shower hose, install a shower bracket and a toilet seat ring to complete the internal facilities.
  • Door Making and Installation: Fix hinges and wooden boards on the frame of the water storage tank to form a toilet door. Install a door handle for easy opening and closing.
