How to Build an Outdoor Portable Toilet

Admin October 05, 2026

The construction of an outdoor portable toilet should be carried out according to the type, with common types including prefabricated/rental, homemade simple, and tent-style. The specific construction processes are as follows:

I. Construction Process for Prefabricated/Rental Portable Toilets

  1. Site Preparation: Choose a flat and solid ground, avoid low-lying areas prone to water accumulation, and reserve at least 0.5 meters of operating space around the site to ensure convenient installation and subsequent maintenance.
  2. Main Body Positioning: Move the toilet main body to the designated location using lifting equipment or manual dragging. Adjust the height of the bottom legs and use a level to ensure the main body is completely horizontal, preventing structural instability or poor drainage due to tilting.
  3. Drainage System Connection: Open the bottom drainage outlet and connect the drainage pipe to the municipal sewer or a collection tank. If using a collection tank, ensure it has sufficient capacity and good sealing. After connection, conduct a water injection test to check for leaks at the joints.
  4. Water and Electricity Connection: Have a professional electrician handle the power connection to ensure the safety of circuits for lighting, ventilation equipment, etc. The water inlet should be connected to a clean water source and equipped with a filter to prevent impurities from clogging the pipes.
  5. Internal Inspection and Cleaning: Test the functionality of the door lock, flushing system, etc., and clean up any sharp objects or debris inside to prevent injuries during use.

II. Construction Method for Homemade Simple Portable Toilets

  1. Basic Structure Construction: Use a water storage tank and a pallet as the main body. Install universal wheels at the bottom of the pallet for easy movement, and place a recycled water storage tank on top as a sewage container.
  2. Tank Modification: Cut an opening in the top water storage tank, stack two tanks and fix them with self-tapping screws to enhance structural stability. Cut a rectangular doorway measuring 180 cm in height and 50 cm in width for easy access.
  3. Drainage System Installation: Drill holes in the ground inside the tank, install elbows and pipes as drainage outlets, seal the gaps with waterproof glue, and then fix the toilet to ensure that sewage can smoothly drain into the sewage tank.
  4. Handwashing Facility Configuration: Fix water pipes on the wall with clips, install a faucet and a stainless steel basin handwashing sink, and connect the toilet water tank and shower hose to achieve water resource recycling.
  5. Door Installation: Make a door using wooden boards and hinges, fix the door handle, and complete the construction to ensure smooth door operation and good sealing.

III. Key Points for Building a Tent-Style Portable Toilet

Choose a snap-button tent (not an instant tent) and complete the main frame construction by inserting rods into the snap buttons. It is recommended that the height be over 2 meters to provide sufficient space. After fixing the hanging points, cover the ground cloth to enhance moisture resistance and privacy, suitable for short-term outdoor activities or emergency scenarios.

Recommended Usage Scenarios: Rental types are suitable for events or construction sites, homemade types are suitable for emergencies or low-cost needs, and tent types are suitable for short-term outdoor activities.
