Relocation of Toilet Position in Old Buildings

Admin October 07, 2026

The position of the toilet in old buildings can be relocated, but it must be done with caution. Here are two common methods and precautions:

Method 1: Modify the Position of the Original Toilet Drain Pipe

  1. Confirm the Feasibility of the New Position: Ensure that the new position can be connected to the drainage riser to avoid poor drainage due to excessively long pipes or improper angles. If ground excavation is involved, assess the impact on the floor slab structure. Generally, it is not recommended to damage the reinforcement, as this may affect building safety.
  2. Pipe Disassembly and Installation: If using PVC drainage pipes, connect the pipes with special clamps to ensure tightness. Pay attention to the slope during connection, typically maintaining a slope of 2%-3% for proper drainage.
  3. Hole Treatment and Waterproofing: After excavation, backfill with concrete and apply a waterproof layer (such as waterproof paint or waterproof membrane) to prevent leakage. The waterproof layer should extend at least 30 centimeters up the wall, and a closed-water test (24-48 hours) should be conducted to confirm no leakage.
  4. Floor Decoration and Toilet Installation: After the waterproof layer dries, restore the floor decoration (such as tiles), and finally install the toilet and connect the water tank and drain pipe.
Precautions: This method requires consultation with the downstairs residents and their consent before construction to avoid affecting their normal life or causing disputes.

Method 2: Use a Toilet Displacement Device

  1. Displacement Device Selection: In the renovation of old houses, a dedicated toilet displacement device can be selected, with a length adjustable according to needs (e.g., 30-50 centimeters). If an extended distance is required, a 50mm PVC pipe (50mm diameter) can be installed in the middle to reduce drainage resistance.
  2. Accessory Usage: For relocation, accessories such as a 10mm flat pipe plus a 90mm round pipe may be used, with one end connected to a 110mm flat pipe (对接 with the original drain outlet) and the other end connected to the toilet drain outlet. Ensure that the accessory interfaces are sealed to prevent leakage.
  3. Construction Points: The displacement device should be installed horizontally to avoid poor drainage due to tilting. After installation, secure it with cement or waterproof adhesive and cover it with a protective layer (such as tiles) to prevent deformation under pressure.
Applicable Scenarios: This method is suitable for short relocation distances (generally not exceeding 1 meter). If the relocation distance is too long, it may increase the risk of blockage and requires careful evaluation.

Summary: Relocating the toilet in old buildings requires comprehensive consideration of structural safety, drainage efficiency, and neighborly relations. Modifying pipes requires professional construction, while displacement devices are suitable for small-scale adjustments. Regardless of the method used, strict adherence to construction specifications is essential to ensure waterproofing and drainage performance meet standards.
