Portable Toilets for the National Day Parade

Admin September 21, 2026

Portable toilets are crucial facilities for addressing sanitation needs during the National Day parade, ensuring the smooth progress of the event through scientific allocation and flexible management.

In major events like the National Day parade, the deployment of portable toilets must consider three core elements: quantity, type, and layout. Taking the 70th anniversary of the National Day as an example, Beijing Environmental Sanitation Group set up a total of 596 portable toilets around Tiananmen Square and along Chang'an Avenue, including 3,540 new toilet stalls and 1,505 maintenance toilet stalls, with a total of over 5,000 toilet stalls to meet instantaneous peak demand. The allocation of toilet stalls is not fixed but dynamically adjusted according to the event schedule: for instance, two hours before the parade begins is a peak period for toilet use, during which the proportion of female toilet stalls is increased (with female toilet stalls accounting for up to 60% in some areas) or backup toilet stalls are temporarily activated to avoid queues and congestion.

The choice of portable toilet types is closely related to site characteristics. Tent toilets, with their large internal space and high turnover efficiency, serve as the mainstay in core areas. Their modular design allows for the conversion between male and female toilet stalls in just 5 minutes by removing partitions and signs, enabling flexible responses to changes in pedestrian flow. Trailer toilets are suitable for open areas and can be quickly moved to points of demand. Single toilets are deployed in confined spaces such as alleys and narrow streets, achieving dense coverage by reducing the size of each toilet (approximately 2 square meters). Additionally, all toilets are equipped with modern facilities such as automatic flushing, deodorization systems, and accessibility handles. Some high-end models also incorporate intelligent monitoring systems that display real-time toilet stall usage status to guide pedestrian flow dispersion.

To ensure overall aesthetics, the exterior design of portable toilets employs camouflage techniques, with shell colors matching those of ordinary support vehicles and covered with camouflage nets or event-themed decorations to avoid a jarring appearance. Meanwhile, staggered usage strategies optimize management: parade participants adjust their diet and water intake schedules in advance, and some wear special diapers to reduce toilet needs, thereby lowering reliance on public toilets.

These measures collectively establish an efficient and orderly sanitation support system, ensuring that major events like the National Day parade can maintain normal order even under the pressure of millions of pedestrians.
