Move Bathroom from Living Room to Toilet
Generally, it is feasible to move the bathroom from the living room area to its original toilet position or to replan the bathroom location, but it is necessary to strictly comply with building codes and evaluate renovation costs, as some renovation actions may be illegal.

I. Legality Requirements
According to the "Measures for the Administration of Interior Decoration and Renovation of Residential Buildings", it is prohibited to convert a room without waterproofing requirements (such as a living room) into a bathroom. If the living room originally lacks waterproofing conditions (such as no waterproof layer on the floor or no reserved drainage pipes), converting it into a bathroom is illegal. In addition, if the renovation involves altering the main structure or load-bearing components of the building (such as demolishing walls other than non-load-bearing walls or changing the floor load), a design plan must be proposed by the original design unit or a design unit with corresponding qualifications and approved by relevant departments; otherwise, it is also illegal.
II. Practical Operation Costs and Difficulties
If the bathroom position needs to be adjusted, the following projects are required:
- Water and Electricity Renovation: It is necessary to relay water supply pipes and drainage pipes and ensure that the drainage slope meets the standard (usually 2%-3%) to avoid water accumulation or odor.
- Wall Renovation: If the bathroom area needs to be expanded or reduced, it may involve demolishing non-load-bearing walls or building new partition walls. Attention should be paid to whether the wall materials meet waterproofing requirements (for example, when using light steel keel gypsum board partition walls, a waterproof layer should be added on the water-facing side).
- Waterproofing and Drainage Works: The bathroom floor and walls need to be waterproofed (the waterproof layer should be at least 1.8 meters high), and a secondary drainage system (such as a hidden floor drain) should be installed to prevent leakage and complaints from neighbors downstairs. The overall cost is relatively high, including material costs, labor costs, and possible property deposits, and the construction period is relatively long (usually 1-2 months).
III. Alternative Solution Suggestions
If only the convenience of using the toilet needs to be optimized, the following alternative solutions can be considered:
- Portable Toilet: Suitable for temporary needs (such as during renovation or outdoor activities), but regular cleaning and proper ventilation should be ensured to avoid odor diffusion.
- Assistive Tools: Such as commode chairs, which can solve the toilet difficulties of the elderly, postoperative rehabilitation patients, and other groups. They do not require bathroom renovation and have a relatively low cost (about 100-500 yuan).
Summary: The adjustment of the bathroom position should be based on legality and compliance. If the living room does not have waterproofing conditions or involves changes to load-bearing structures, it is advisable to prioritize alternative solutions to reduce costs and risks.
