Modular Research Center — A New Modular Structural System

Admin September 12, 2026

To meet the needs of researchers at home and abroad, the core area of the modular manufacturing base includes 12 independent workstations and a main venue for collaborative research projects. The building is highly flexible: it can advance new modular concepts and provide intellectual support for modular chemical plants. To avoid the drawbacks of large open offices, the designers partitioned the open, shared central space so staff can collaborate within a fluid framework. Curtains and other movable elements help divide the space more effectively.

The project site integrates the needs of employees and visitors, and its functions go beyond those of a typical manufacturing plant. In front of the research center are an entrance and a public space that form part of the overall plant layout. This area consists of a triangular courtyard and a multipurpose circular theater. On either side of the courtyard are a restaurant and an exhibition hall.

Modular buildings are usually composed of rectangular modules placed side by side; designers create new spaces through custom combinations. The floor plan and supporting equipment serve fixed functions. At the same time, they also support the roof and form a continuous main space below. To ensure ventilation in the office areas, each unit uses a full glass curtain wall so sunlight can enter from every direction, while two roof skylights add a more relaxed atmosphere throughout. This project will serve as a new model that can be applied to different kinds of buildings.

The lead architect noted: "Through collaboration, we gradually came to understand the limits of modular construction. Every project brings new challenges and improvements. In the design of this research center, we hope to push further the spatial possibilities of modular buildings."
