Modular Housing | A Secluded Mountain Cabin

The Norwegian Trekking Association has 35 self-service mountain lodges in the Soddatjørn mountains. Visitors are usually members of the Norwegian Trekking Association.

In 2013, the Norwegian Trekking Association organized an architecture competition to design a self-catering mountain holiday cabin beside the rocky shore community at Soddatjørn mountain lake, along the Lysefjord hiking trail. The brief required the cabin to be modern, easy to maintain, and built from ready-made factory modules, so that long construction periods could be avoided in remote mountain areas with unpredictable weather.

The designers worked with the site conditions, and the solution takes the wilderness experience one step further. The complex includes a main building, sleeping pods, toilets with storage, and a sauna. Water can be drawn from the lake, and there is no mains power. The main building, bedrooms, and sauna are heated with wood. The kitchen has two gas stoves that guests can use at the same time, and solar panels provide lighting. The cabin's exterior finish is rolled zinc, which resists wind and snow and needs no maintenance for many years.

Inside, extensive wood creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere. All buildings have glass walls that open up panoramic views of the picturesque surroundings. The main building has a rectangular plan with a kitchen, living area, and sleeping facilities for 30 to 35 hikers. The smaller cabins sleep five. Rooms in the main building are carefully arranged to encourage interaction among different hikers.
