Modular Combined Container House

Admin September 10, 2026

A modular combined container house uses containers as basic units joined into a modular building form, with fast construction, low cost, and mobility among its traits.

Core materials and process: Corrosion-resistant steel plate and eco panels are combined with marine anti-corrosion methods; service life can exceed 20 years. Custom design is supported for standard sizes from 20 to 60 feet to meet different scene needs.

Development history:

  • 2006: U.S. architect Peter DeMaria designed the first nationally certified two-story container home, helping shift the form from temporary buildings toward permanent housing.
  • 2008: CIMC rapidly built a container school that could hold a thousand people after the Wenchuan earthquake, proving efficiency in emergency scenes.
  • 2010: China began drafting the Technical Code for Modular Combined Container Houses, advancing industry standardization.
  • 2012: CIMC delivered the world’s first recyclable container hotel for the UK, expanding commercial applications.

Technical advantages:

  • Factory prefabrication: Building shell, envelope, MEP, and interior finishes are completed in the factory as standardized prefabricated space modules, then joined on site—greatly raising construction efficiency.
  • Strong performance: Steel framing offers high seismic and deformation resistance; sealing is good and walls combine sound and thermal insulation; based on a standard steel chassis, flexible combined spaces can be derived.
  • Reusable: Detachable connectors allow convenient, efficient disassembly and reassembly for multiple reuse cycles and lower long-term cost.

Market applications: In Q1 2026, China’s prefabricated building (including modular) export growth reached 45%. Modular combined container houses, as a major part, are widely used in Southeast Asian hotels and schools, Middle East data centers, and Pacific island livelihood projects. Easy transport especially suits units that change sites often, making them a popular choice in the global modular building market.
