Modern Container Modular Housing

Admin September 16, 2026

Modern container modular housing is a modular architectural form that uses containers as basic units and is constructed through combination and splicing.

Origin and Development

The concept of modern container modular housing was first proposed by Phillip C. Clark in 1987 with a modification patent. Its development process includes several key milestones: In 2006, American architect Peter DeMaria designed the first double-story container residence that received national certification, promoting the application of container housing in the residential field. In 2008, CIMC quickly built a container school that could accommodate a thousand people after the Wenchuan earthquake, demonstrating its advantages in emergency site construction. In 2010, China initiated the compilation of the Technical Specification for Container Modular Combined Housing, laying the foundation for the standardized development of the industry. In 2012, CIMC further built the world's first recyclable container hotel for the UK, reflecting its environmental protection and sustainability.

Structure and Materials

Modern container modular housing adopts a steel frame structure, with corrosion-resistant steel plates and environmentally friendly panels as the core materials. Combined with ship anti-corrosion technology, its service life can reach more than 20 years. It supports customized designs in standard sizes ranging from 20 to 60 feet. The box unit structure of modular container houses uses standard components welded from special section steels. The boxes are connected by bolts, ensuring a stable structure and convenient and quick installation.

Performance Characteristics

  • Fast construction, low cost, and mobility: Widely used in residential, office, and emergency site fields. Modular container houses are mobile and reusable, adopting modular design and factory prefabricated production. Using the container as the basic unit, they can be used alone or combined horizontally and vertically to form spacious usage spaces, with a maximum of three stories in the vertical direction.
  • Strong adaptability: Cold-resistant container houses are specially designed for extreme cold environments and have good thermal insulation performance. Assembled houses have strong environmental adaptability and good anti-corrosion, sealing, and thermal insulation properties. Light steel modular products have advantages such as modular design, earthquake and wind resistance, fire and thermal insulation, and short construction periods.
  • High degree of customization: Can be designed with targeted layouts and interior and exterior decorations according to actual needs, meeting the personalized requirements of different climate regions and customers.

Application Cases

In 2026, the Taohuayuan Block in Minhe, Qinghai, used modular buildings as the framework, with 63 groups of creative containers arranged in a staggered manner, covering a total construction area of 1,776 square meters. It has become a social hub for locals, a memory landmark for wanderers returning home, and a cultural and tourism window for countless visitors to understand Minhe.
